The official release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is only a matter of days away, but it seems that the Wii U version of the game has already been leaked online.
It’s been more than five years since the release of the last mainline Zelda game, and fans are eager to get their hands on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild when it launches early next month. However, reports are circulating that the Wii U version of the game has already been leaked.
A compressed version of the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild has apparently been spotted online, according to a report from My Nintendo News. It’s thought that the game is not yet in a playable state, but fans have already begun tinkering with files to see what they can discover.
While it’s not yet possible to initialize the game, people have been able to open individual files to get a sneak preview of content from the game that hasn’t yet been showcased in trailers or gameplay footage. A high quality image of the game’s title screen is being treated as the smoking gun that confirms that the leak is legitimate.
This means that Zelda fans need to be on the lookout for spoilers on the closing stretch toward the game’s release. Anyone that wants to go into the game fresh should be aware that there is now information out in the wild that could impede their ability to do so.
Most of the information that’s been culled from the leaked version of the game so far doesn’t relate to the plot, so the spoilers are relatively minor. However, if anyone is able to grab the game’s final cutscene from the leaked package, there will be a much greater threat of story spoilers.
Adding to the confusion is the fact that not all the information that’s being spread around comes from the leak. While it seems that a version of the game has been leaked, opportunists are taking advantage of the situation to proliferate fake “spoilers.”
The takeaway for gamers excited to play Breath of the Wild next week is this: be careful what you read over the next few days. There are already legitimate spoilers out there, and there are likely to be more by the time launch day rolls around.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launches for the Wii U and the Switch on March 3, 2017.
