The Legend of Dragoon has finally been added to PS Plus Premium, ending its long drought of unavailability. The announcement of The Legend of Dragoon's debut on PS Premium caused widespread excitement, as long-time fans eagerly awaited any news surrounding the title. The Legend of Dragoon is a first-party title for Sony, originally developed by Japan Studio for the PS1. Given the overwhelmingly positive reception to its debut on PS Premium, Sony is leaving money on the table by not giving the title the remake it deserves.

Despite mixed critical reception at the time of its release, The Legend of Dragoon boasts a die-hard fan base. It was well ahead of its time, featuring realistic and fully voiced cutscenes, a 50-hour campaign, and a complex battle system. Unfortunately for fans, The Legend of Dragoon has been absent on PSN since 2014, with the release of the PS4. This long wait led many to believe Sony was preparing a remake of the title. With this month's debut of The Legend of Dragoon on PS Premium, players are pleased, but not quite satiated.

Fans of The Legend of Dragoon Have Expected a Remake For Decades

Rumors of a current-gen remake of The Legend of Dragoon have circulated since a Bluepoint Games developer teased the project in 2019, though others have come and gone since the dawn of the PlayStation 3. As a first-party RPG, The Legend of Dragoon seemed ripe for a graphical overhaul, as its gameplay was already well ahead of its time. Around the same time as the 2019 rumor, fans created a petition asking for a remake, which garnered nearly 30,000 signatures. The Bluepoint Studio rumors eventually fell through, after it was acquired by Sony in 2021. This acquisition made it far less likely that the studio would focus on further remakes.

Fans have long maintained that The Legend of Dragoon deserves a remake since it showcased some of the best visuals and gameplay of the PS1 era, but received little attention from the general community. With Sony shifting its focus to Next-Gen remakes of beloved first-party titles, players contend that older IPs such as The Legend of Dragoon are more deserving, as they have the most room for improvement. If making money on first-party remakes is Sony's true goal, it is leaving money on the table by not remaking games that fans actually request. When it was revealed that The Legend of Dragoon would finally return through PS Plus Premium, players were elated to play the title once more, though many were disappointed to see it denied the attention it deserves.

Legend of Dragoon Deserves Remake

Though a welcome addition to the PS Premium service, the current edition of The Legend of Dragoon does little to reward fans for the long wait. Aside from the addition of trophies to The Legend of Dragoon, the game lacks any major improvements. Despite all of this, its release has been praised by gamers worldwide. Were a full-blown remake to follow, the hype carried over from its PS Premium release would all but ensure that The Legend of Dragoon sells like wildfire.

After nearly 10 years of absence, fans are rushing to The Legend of Dragoon on PS Plus, despite its lack of improvements. Though it is too soon to know just how many players have downloaded The Legend of Dragoon on PS Premium, the reception to the title bodes well for its value moving forward. Sony should take note, and realize just how financially successful a return to the franchise would be. Given its efforts toward providing fans with the best version of its first-party games, The Legend of Dragoon provides an easy home run for the company. With so many players ready and willing to dish out their money for a remake, Sony is ignoring a pile of money that has been accumulating for over a decade.

Legend of Dragoon is available to play on PS1, PS3, PS Vita, PS4, and PS5.
