Valve's hit 2009 multiplayer survival horror game Left 4 Dead 2 came back into prominence last week thanks to the release of a free official update called Left 4 Dead 2: The Last Stand that was created entirely by fans. The game has accrued a large catalog of community-made content through mods over the years, and one replaces the classic zombie game's common infected with the characters from modern multiplayer hit Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.

For the uninitiated, Fall Guys is a battle royale in which players are costumed "beans" who have to survive multiple rounds of obstacle courses and Mario Party-style minigames to obtain a crown. Some Fall Guys games such as Door Dash have crowds of players converging on individual points of interest, which looks not too dissimilar from a horde of infected in the Left 4 Dead series.

Given that, the inspiration for this particular mod turning zombies into Fall Guys beans is pretty clear. DragonDances uploaded it to Steam Workshop on September 25, just a day after Left 4 Dead 2's The Last Stand expansion released. They say it is a collection of mods for the character models and sounds created by another user named "merc," but the ID codes provided lead back to DragonDances' page.

The breadth of mods available to use in Left 4 Dead 2 cover a huge range of subjects, so it isn't surprising to see popular new titles receive player-made content for the survival horror game. Fall Guys became such a sensation following its release in August that even celebrities and star athletes have been playing it. Earlier this month, members of the LA Chargers football team played Fall Guys on their stadium's jumbotron.

Left 4 Dead 2 is not the only game fans have modded Fall Guys characters into. In fact, it isn't even the only first-person shooter that lets players blast apart hordes of beans. One game designer created a Doom and Fall Guys mashup called "Doom Guys," in which Doomguy can rip and tear through armies of otherwise cute, oblong characters.

With Halloween season right around the corner, now seems as good a time as any to jump into a zombie game like Left 4 Dead 2, whether or not one is interested in turning its hordes into colorful beans. At the same time, Fall Guys Season 2 is set to begin in October, which should offer fans another multiplayer option with less firearms.

Left 4 Dead 2 is available now on PC and Xbox 360.
