More than ten years after its release, Left for Dead 2 still has a very active community and, even in 2019, the game’s servers peaked at over 15,000 simultaneous players. It’s no wonder, then, that modders are still releasing new campaigns for the game.

The developers of the Chernobyl mod for Left for Dead 2 have finally released the results of their efforts after nine long years of dedication and, as they term it, stubbornness. Chernobyl: Chapter One is now available on the Steam Workshop.

In order to play the new campaign, gamers must have Left 4 Dead 2 and all seven content add-ons. The versus element of the mod will not be available until the next update, but the current release features five co-op maps as well as a new rescue vehicle, new models and textures, and even a specially composed soundtrack. The developers are also generously hosting nine servers in different parts of the world for people to play on, or gamers can host the campaign on their own dedicated servers.

Left 4 Dead 2 is a cooperative first-person shooter set during a zombie apocalypse. With a team of up to four players, gamers bash, chainsaw, and shoot their way through hordes of different zombie types, known as Infected. The story of Chernobyl: Chapter One follows a group of four survivors headed to Siberia following a rumor that zombies can’t survive the extreme cold. Unfortunately, that turns out not to be true, and the campaign begins with a helicopter crash right as the group flies over Chernobyl.

In addition to being able to explore Reactor Block 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, players will have access to locations in the abandoned city of Pripyat and the Jupiter Factory located on the outskirts of the city. A lot of attention to detail has gone into creating the Chernobyl campaign. Many of the showcased areas—the overgrown amusement park with its rusty Ferris wheel, the empty swimming pool, the waterlogged tunnels beneath the city—eerily replicate what the abandoned sites actually look like today. What better setting, really, for facing off against masses of Left 4 Dead's Infected?

Left 4 Dead 2 was released on PC and Xbox 360 in 2009.
