The ongoing rivalry between Nvidia and AMD is still quite strong, and with Intel about to enter the arena, the GPU market is about to get even more competitive. With team red rumored to be unleashing three more high-end RDNA 2 RX graphics cards, and team blue said to be finally releasing its up-and-coming range this summer, team green may have to pull out the stops to make sure it stays ahead of the game. Luckily, the RTX 3090 Ti is on the way, and with it due to launch very soon, it looks as though it's going to take up a lot of space inside PC towers.
According to some leaked photos from Videocardz, the upcoming Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti is looking like it's going to be quite a beast of a product. Numerous iterations from various partners show that it will sport a rather huge heatsink, and will be physically thicker, as well as consume a lot of power. As an example, the FTW3 model from EVGA will have a 3.5 slot design, as opposed to a 2.75 slot from its predecessor. This latest card will also require a 16-pin power connector, and as a result, EVGA has used a new PCB to accommodate it.
In terms of how much power it will require, the specs show that the upcoming Ti will have a TDP of 480W, which is more than the 3090 but is less than the high-end 40-series. Rumors show that the Nvidia RTX 4090 could require 600W, which is pretty smoldering and could be an issue for some. As far as the 3090 Ti goes, it's looking like this will be the final piece of hardware from the Ampere range before the next generation makes its presence known.
Speaking of the next generation, AMD has announced its RDNA 3 technology, and Nvidia is said to be unleashing five RTX 40-series SKUs. It's looking like the next stage in GPU technology is just months away, with team green looking to begin launching the Ada Lovelace range in September.
Despite the ongoing shortages, graphics cards are continuing to come down in price, though they are still above MSRP. With both Nvidia and AMD now facing potentially stiff competition from newcomer Intel, there's hope that the market will look a lot better once the next generation arrives. As for the 3090 Ti, its sheer size may be a moot point anyway, given that it could cost up to $4,000 according to recent rumors. Either that, or it'll be difficult to get hold of anyway.
