When it comes to all things GPU, two major companies reign supreme: Nvidia and AMD. With one in competition with the other, it's understandable that both would be looking to constantly keep ahead of the curve with new products and new ideas. With the former looking to launch its GeForce RTX 3080 Ti later on this month, the latter is arguably closing in on them as leaked images published recently show the potential spec for AMD's upcoming RX 6600 and RX 6600XT cards.
The images appear to be screenshots from GPU-Z, a small piece of software that provides hardware information about a user's system. The screenshots show detailed specifications for both the AMD Radeon RX 6600 and the 6600XT, respectively. According to the images, both the 6600 and 6600XT will have 8GB of GDDR6 memory. Some of the information is missing in the readout, such as the texture and pixel fillrate for the 6600, as well as the release date. Astute people may also notice there's no mention of CUDA cores either, but that's because these are specific to Nvidia cards.
The fact that there is no release date shown in GPU-Z is not really surprising given than AMD has yet to announce the cards. What can be gleamed from the information is that the XT version is likely to be slightly more powerful than the 6600. However, with 8GB of VRAM, both cards could potentially fall short of some of Nvidia's latest ones, such as the GeForce RTX 3080 which has 10GB, or the RTX 3090 which has 24GB of GDDR6X.
While at a cursory glance, it appears as though AMD's cards may not match what Nvidia have been putting out, it's worth noting that both companies are capable of delivering hardware that stack side-by-side. Much of it comes down to benchmarks with more advanced users and industry types delving deep into the minutiae of what each individual product is capable of. But for the average gamer, it's likely to come down to more basic preferences or pricing.
While this is still only a leak, it appears to be a leak with a lot of useful information. Leaks are part and parcel of the gaming tech industry. AMD's competitor Nvidia is no stranger to speculation given that it too experiences leaks of spec and benchmarks. While it can't be determined whether the information is accurate or not, the source indicates that AMD are likely to make an announcement about its upcoming GPUs at this year's Computex, an annual computer expo held in Taiwan.
