League of Legends is, and always will be, a contentious game for one reason or another. The game is competitive by nature, sure, but even long-time mega-fans of League of Legends have some things to say about the seminal MOBA – some things that need to be said aren't always the popular thing to say, though.

Of all places on the internet, Reddit is the best place to go to find unpopular opinions. They infect every subreddit, for better or for worse, and can serve as a means to suggest improvements to beloved media or just to vent about a niche problem. When it comes to League of Legends, there are a plethora of weird and unique ideas that Redditors have suggested over the years.

7 Annie Is The Worst Character To Learn The Game With

League of Legends Annie Ultimate Tibbers

When it comes to learning League of Legends, different champions have different skill curves. A champion like Darius or Ashe can teach players different aspects of MOBA gameplay, while some like Miss Fortune or Blitzcrank can be generally useful to just about any player, regardless of skill.

Redditor lsa_II pointed out the problems with suggesting that Annie is a good character to learn with, though. Annie can't clear waves very well, she doesn't have to manage mana in the same way as other champions, and in general her playstyle only applies to her, not to any other champions.

6 It's Not Riot's Fault Skins Aren't For Everyone

When it comes to including cosmetic items for real-life money in free-to-play games, League of Legends has hundreds and hundreds of options. However, players are often disappointed with the lack of options for niche champions and critical of Riot's decision to make skins for popular characters nearly exclusively.

Redditor emojiexpert listed reasons why Riot is in "an impossible situation" when it comes to the game's skins. Their argument was based on the fact that the game is free and how Riot can only expect to make money on skins for champions that people actually play – at more than 3,500 upvotes, this opinion wasn't that unpopular after all.

5 Talon Needs Some Appreciation

League of Legends Unpopular Opinion Talon

Talon, the Blade's Shadow, is a rogue-type champion with several close-range dagger-type abilities. He fits easily into the Jungler role, but some players have criticized his character design for being uninspired, and his backstory for being too unexplained.

In a thread dedicated to unpopular opinions, Redditor kupckake simply posted that Talon should be redesigned for visuals and backstory, a sentiment shared by other commenters. Such an under-utilized character could surely use a re-branding and a facelift, no?

4 Players Overhype What Pros Say

One problem in just about every online competitive game is the problem of players relying on pro opinions for their own opinions. Reddit tuckerb13 pointed out several of these problems, pointing out that fans get "tunnel-vision"  and don't try to innovate beyond what's already proven to work.

Tuckerb13 pointed out that many players consider many champions to be unplayable, and only two or three champions are actually "meta" for each role. The truth is that the game's balance allows for just about any team composition – provided players know what they're doing, of course.

3 Is Toxicity Being Addressed?

Skin for Heimerdinger in League of legends for aesthetically toxic players

Another problem with just about every popular competitive game is the problem of toxicity. Riot has dealt with toxicity in League of Legends since the beginning in one way or another, though some players claim to hardly notice a difference. Sometimes it feels like Riot just isn't doing enough to combat toxicity in the game, despite the Tribunal system and other measures taken.

A comment by LonelyLimon sarcastically says that Riot decreasing toxicity is unpopular. In fact, this opinion is shared amongst most of the game's player base. People who tend to act toxic on online games are always far outnumbered by the people who just want to play the game without fear of being targeted.

2 Riot Knows What They're Doing

One of the highlights of Riot as a company is the high level of communication it has with its fans. It's very open, responsive, and willing to take criticism as a company, and sure enough, it receives more criticism than just about any other gaming company. Some of these criticisms are valid, but many players simply don't think Riot knows what they're doing.

Redditor LeksAir pointed out that the level of communication that Riot has with its audience is "insane" compared to others like EA and Activision. They wouldn't be a multi-billion international company if the heads didn't have some idea of what they were doing, especially when it comes to community interaction.

1 League of Legends Good

Perhaps the most unpopular opinion of all amongst League of Legends fans is that, after all the valid criticisms and rage quits the game warrants, it's still a good game at heart. Too many times gamers get too competitive and think a game is terrible because they lose. Nothing could be further from the case – the very fact that the best players can still lose is a testament to its balance.

There are far worse MOBA-type games out there, and in general, League of Legends outranks just about all of them. It's just classic MOBA gameplay – League of Legends is less complex than DOTA 2, and more strategic than Heroes of the Storm. Redditors KeeBoley and mad_embutido both shared this sentiment in this unpopular opinion thread.
