There are 140 champions in League of Legends to choose from at the moment. In fact, there were 40 choices upon release! One of them is Viego, the Ruined King.

Once the ruler of a kingdom that is now gone, he perished. This happened 1,000 years ago due to an event where Viego tried bringing his wife back to life. In the process, he triggered the Ruination. This caused him to become the tortured wraith Viego is today, able to control Harrowings and unleash Black Mist. Nothing will stop him from slaughtering all who stand in his way on his ever-quest to restore Viego's wife yet again as to mend his broken heart.

8 Viego's Niece Kalista

League of League Kalista

Viego has a niece and her name is Kalista. She has always been his most trusted general. In fact, even though he is her uncle, they are roughly the same age (and even friends beyond just being family). When Kalista's father died, Viego became the king, and he became a worse person...still, she remained loyal.

In fact, one time Kalista prevented Viego from being assassinated. This is how Isolde died, as she was poisoned instead of him. Kalista tried finding a cure for the poison but she did not do so in time. That is why Kalista was imprisoned and painted as a traitor, for letting Isolde die. That being said, Hecarim got her out to lead him and Viego (and their armies) to the Blessed Isles for the Waters of Life. Viego ordered her to kill anyone and everyone who went against them when their plans started falling apart (because the masters of the Blessed Isles denied them the Waters of Life) but she refused...which lead to her getting stabbed by Hecarim...which lead to Kalista's people fighting with the Iron Order.

7 Viego's Wife Isolde

League of Legends Isolde

Viego had a wife and her name was Isolde. She was a seamstress. Back in the day, he was immature and selfish, as well as self-centered and power-hungry. Then the beautiful Isolde, a commoner from a conquered country, walked into his life.

Afterward, Viego started ignoring his responsibilities as the king and devoted all his time to her. He was obsessed with her. Of course, eventually, Isolde stabbed him with his own sword after Viego brought her back to life. So, it is not confirmed whether or not they were actually in love; Isolde may or may not have hated him, actually.

6 Viego's Rival Mordekaiser

League Of Legends Mordekaiser

In a taunt, Maokai implies that Mordekaiser and Viego are rivals.

Maokai, the Twisted Treant, is a huge and angry treant who fights against the Shadow Isles. He was revived through the Waters of Life. Mordekaiser, the Iron Revenant, is a vicious warlord who died twice and got revived three times. He uses necromancy and apparently would best Viego in combat if it were to come to that (and does not necessarily like him).

5 Viego Actually Did Die

League of Legends Viego Blade

Following getting stabbed by Isolde, his wife, Viego actually did die. After his heart was punctured, the magic of the Blade of the Ruined King tried to bring him back to life. But at the same time, so did the magic of the Blessed Water. Therefore, this back and forth overloaded and the Ruination happened.

Viego is the "Ruined King" because of this event. After Isolde's death, he was emotionally distraught and "ruined," too. And the Ruination turned the Blessed Isles into the Shadow Isles.

4 Goth Rock And Heavy Metal

League of Legends Viego Appearance

The reason Viego is young, as opposed to old, is because Riot wanted to create a king that would be naive enough to doom the world in an attempt to revive his lost love. They made him vain as well ("having or showing an excessively high opinion of one's appearance, abilities, or worth").

Additionally, Viego's design, besides youthful, was inspired by goth rock and heavy metal. Goth rock was all the rage in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s throughout the post-punk scene, such as The Cure. And the style of heavy metal, of course, includes body modification, make-up, hairstyle, leather, and spikes.

3 Scrapped Spells

While Viego was being developed, Riot scrapped several spells they were considering being a part of his skill set. There was one ability that allowed Viego to possess allies and move them around the map. And another skill that allowed him to create pools of black mist. Another ability that almost happened was one that allowed Viego to faze right through walls using black mist.

In fact, he almost was given a passive ability where Viego started every game with the item Blade of the Ruined King (in his inventory). It was designed where he would have to collect souls to grow the weapon stronger and stronger (from a tiny dagger to his current blade).

2 Spain And Camelot (And Ireland)

League of Legends Viego Concept

The name, Viego, may be a combination of "viejo" (Spanish for "old") and Diego. His kingdom, Camavor, in particular, is inspired by both the country of Spain and Camelot, the capital where King Arthur ruled.

Aside from that, Viego is a common last name among Spanish people. On the other hand, his wife Isolde comes from Irish culture. There is a princess, called Iseult of Ireland, whereas "Isuelt" is also referred to as "Isolde."

1 Sean Teale

League of Legends Viego Throne

Viego is voiced by British actor Sean Teale. While this role happens to be his only claim to fame in the video game realm, he has many well-known appearances in television and movies.

In film, Teale was Chunks in We Are the Freaks (2014) and Alvin Murdoch in Survivor (2015). And in TV, he was Nick Levan in Skins (2011), Young Ramses in The Bibles (2013), and King Alfor in Voltron: Legendary Defender (2016).
