Today it was announced that Gun Media, the publisher behind Friday the 13th: The Game, and Bloober Team, developers of the Layers of Fear franchise, are collaborating on an upcoming game.

The announcement came in the form of a short trailer, titled Project Méliès, that offered very little as to what the game would be about. The backgrounds of both studios, however, suggest it might be another horror title. The only clues are what can be gleaned from the trailer, which seem to indicate the game will take place on the ocean or beneath its waves.

The trailer is presented in the form of an old film reel, which begins with the classic black and white countdown. The film shows the aftermath of some incident at sea, with debris floating about the waters. The final shot of the film is that of a chest, not unlike one from a pirate legend, on the ocean floor, filled with precious treasure.

The project's name and the trailer's film theme, however, might offer more clues than the trailer itself. Méliès was the surname of Marie-Georges-Jean Méliès, a french illusionist and film director from the early days of cinema. One of his most acclaimed films, An Impossible Journey, is a surreal adventure about explorers traveling to the interior of the sun. The end of their travels have them exploring the ocean in a submarine, which eventually explodes. It's easy to see the similarities between this and the scenes from the trailer.

The actual description of the trailer does little to answer the audience's questions, and merely states that Bloober Team and Gun Media will release more information on the game at a later date, including the game's title and release date. All of which go without saying, really. Those interested in the project will simply have to patiently wait for more details.

Gun Media recently announced a new feature for Friday the 13th: The Game that gives players the ability to mix up weapons and kills with the various Jason skins. The update will no longer limit the skins, allowing for more freedom for the player to customize the killer to their individual tastes. This change will make matches a touch more interesting, as campers won't know exactly what to expect.

For those interested in Bloober Team's Layers of Fear, be sure to check out our review of the game. That should provide some insight into what the title is all about and what the studio will bring to Project Méliès. Note that we listed Layers of Fear as one of the scariest games on consoles last year.
