AMC has announced a new Walking Dead spin-off series, Isle of the Dead, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan. The upcoming show will feature popular characters, Maggie and Negan, on a dangerous adventure as they fight to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

The Walking Dead follows survivors of a zombie apocalypse as they struggle to stay alive while under constant attacks from zombies known as “walkers”. With the breakdown of modern civilization, the survivors are forced to confront others who have formed their own communities, laws and morals, which sometimes leads to hostility and conflict between them. The series first aired in 2010, and is currently in its 11th and final season. However, fans will not have a long wait to see their favorite characters back on screen.

Isle of the Dead follows former survivor leaders, Maggie and Negan, as they travel into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror. Set to debut next year, the first season will contain only six episodes. Speaking on her new show, Cohan said “Maggie is very close to my heart, and I’m excited to continue her journey…alongside my friend and collaborator, Jeffrey Dean Morgan.” Morgan, who also serves as an executive producer along with his co-star, also voiced his delight “I’m beyond excited to continue [Negan’s] journey in New York City with Lauren. Walkers in an urban setting has always been such a cool image, but 5th Avenue, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty? The backdrop is amazing, but it’s the story that Eli Jorné cooked up that is even better.”

Eli Jorné, who worked for years as a writer and producer on The Walking Dead, will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the new series. Evidently, fans can expect to witness even more excitement in this forthcoming apocalyptic show. President of entertainment and AMC Studios, Dan McDermott, expressed his enthusiasm to build upon the Walking Dead universe “It not only adds another compelling series to this collection, it extends our storytelling around two unforgettable characters fans have grown to love… It also lets us explore a corner of this universe located on the island of Manhattan, with an iconic skyline that takes on a very different meaning when viewed through the lens of a zombie apocalypse.”

New episodes for part two of The Walking Dead’s concluding season are currently available Sundays on AMC+ every week, and the show continues to be the top titles on the streaming service. The platform also includes its spin-off, Fear of the Walking Dead and will also feature future derivative, Tales of the Walking Dead, set to premiere mid-2022.

While The Walking Dead is coming to an end this year, fans have plenty to look forward to that means the characters will not be missed for long.

Isle of Dead is set to premiere on AMC+ and AMC in 2023.
