Although only amounting to a bevy of rumors at this point, many seem sold on the idea that a remake of The Last of Us is in active development at Naughty Dog. Rumblings of the project have been swirling around for quite some time, leading many to believe that there has to be some kind of truth to it. Naughty Dog has been hard at work on its The Last of Us multiplayer project, but considering the popularity of the IP, it seems likely that the studio has more plans in store for the franchise.

In the past few days, more rumors regarding The Last of Us remake have popped up, claiming that the game will be launching sometime later this year. Although it has yet to be acknowledged or properly revealed by either Sony or Naughty Dog, a safe bet can be made that there is some truth to this rumor. Based on information readily available about the project as well as some other relating factors, there is a possibility that this long-rumored remake could see the light of day before the end of the year.

PS5's Quiet Second Half of 2022

First and foremost, any console needs big games to help support it. The PS5 has had a solid release lineup so far but outside of Horizon: Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 earlier this year, things have been silent regarding what's up next on the schedule. God of War: Ragnarok seems to still be on track for release this year, but players may be expecting at least one other major title as an alternative choice when it comes time to purchase new games.

With more rumors of a PlayStation event being scheduled for sometime in the coming weeks, fans could be in store for some exciting new announcements. Previously announced games like the aforementioned God of War: Ragnarok, but these kinds of presentations generally have one or two brand-new titles to help spice up excitement. This would line up with the persistent rumors of The Last of Us remake being on the way and an opportune time to show it off in full before its release later this year.

The Last of Us - Multiple Projects in Development

The Last of Us

Another factor to consider is the staggering amount of content related to The Last of Us that seems to be in active production. Not only is there a rumored The Last of Us remake, but there is a multiplayer project and a big budget HBO television series starring Pedro Pascal. Sometimes when a franchise has multiple projects in development, they can be used as a means of cross-promotion and work off each other to help build momentum and hype.

The Last of Us multiplayer is likely to be an ongoing investment from both Sony and Naughty Dog, something which will need support and interest from players. What better way to reinvigorate excitement for the series, as well as gauge interest in the upcoming HBO show, than to re-introduce the game that started it all with a fresh new look. As stated, the PS5's lineup later this year is looking pretty quiet later this year and needs something to create a big splash. The Last of Us remains one of the biggest guns in PlayStation's arsenal, and a new game, remake or otherwise, would certainly turn heads among the gaming population.

Whatever Sony has planned for The Last of Us series in the future, hopefully fans don't have to wait much longer for a proper announcement. With the usual E3 season quickly approaching in June, even if the titular event itself is canceled, it seems like the perfect time is around the corner to see whether this rumored remake is actually real.
