There are many moments where both Ellie and Abby are in the wrong in The Last of Us Part II. Both of these characters lose a lot in their quest for vengeance. The game does a great job of showing everything someone could lose in the cycle of revenge. Ellie and Abby both have very strong character arcs that lead to a tragic finale.

The two of them are alike in many ways and both have flaws that cause them to take things too far and put their loved ones in danger. Some of these moments have been very controversial with fans but have resulted in one of the most talked-about video game stories of all time. Warning: spoilers ahead.

10 Abby: Killing Joel

Bill and Joel in The Last of Us Part 1

This is definitely the most controversial thing that Abby has done. It's the single most talked-about part in the entire game and was one of the hardest to get through. It's not just Joel dying that makes it terrible, it's how Abby kills Joel.

She ends up bashing his skull in with a golf club while Ellie is forced to watch. Completing the game makes this moment even more brutal as players realize how Ellie and Joel's relationship was in the process of being rebuilt. Abby took Joel away from Ellie similarly to how Joel takes away Abby's father.

9 Ellie: Pushing Joel Away

This can almost be justified as it was extremely hard for Ellie to deal with the pain of Joel lying to her about the events that took place in the hospital in the first game. However, Joel was really trying to show that he loved Ellie.

He truly did and he was just looking out for her because she was like a daughter to him. Joel's actions were terrible and he was no hero but everything he did was to ensure Ellie's survival and she should have realized that sooner before it was too late.

8 Abby: Shooting Tommy

After finding her friends dead and discovering the map Ellie had used to find them gives clues as to her whereabouts, Abby once again chases revenge. She nearly kills Ellie after sparring her and Tommy in the past.

Abby shoots Tommy after he tries to attack her and gives Ellie and chance to run. This set a really bad example for Lev who is very young and not exactly up to speed on the situation that took place months prior to meeting Abby.

7 Ellie: Chasing Revenge Again

After being sparred once again by Abby, Ellie lives a peaceful life with Dina. She's still haunted by the past and lives with constant flashbacks of Joel's death. Tommy visits Ellie and Dina with a lead on Abby's location.

This kickstarts the cycle of revenge once again. Dina is unable to convince Ellie to stay. This was a bad choice by Ellie as she should have just let go of the past and tried to move on. Abby gave Ellie two chances, even after her friends were brutally killed. Hopefully, she'll be able to find peace again in the future or a part 3.

6 Abby: Killing Jesse

Thankfully Tommy was able to survive the confrontation with Abby. However, Jesse unfortunately did not. He was one of the more memorable new characters that didn't exactly have a ton of backstory and time in the game. Jesse was understanding and truly cared for both Dina and Ellie.

It's a shame that he died in such a brutal way that was a result of Ellie's quest for revenge. It was still terrible for Abby to kill him.

5 Ellie: Brutally Killing Nora

Nora was the first person involved in the death of Joel that Ellie was able to track down. For a moment it almost seemed like Nora regretted being involved but this quickly changed as she was just toying with Ellie to distract her.

This angers Ellie to the point where she goes full-on slasher mode and chases down Nora. They both end up falling into a part of the hospital where they're both exposed to spores. Ellie reveals her immunity and watches as Nora becomes infected. Ellie could have just let this happen but instead, she chooses to brutally murder Nora with an axe.

4 Abby: Nearly Killing Dina

During her fight with Ellie, Abby quickly gets the upper hand. Dina comes to the rescue and nearly is killed as Abby holds a knife to her throat. Had it not been for Lev telling Abby to move on and spare Dina, things could have gone a lot worse.

It's good that Abby was able to let go of her hatred and anger to spare a pregnant woman, unlike Ellie. However, she would have definitely done it if she didn't have someone to pull her back to the light. This would have kept the cycle of revenge going on and would have resulted in Ellie's world being torn apart even more.

3 Ellie: Killing Owen

Ellie's quest for revenge led her to her final location, the aquarium. She was completely sure that Abby was going to be there, but was unfortunately wrong. Instead, Ellie finds Owen and Mel there and attempts to question them about Abby's whereabouts.

This ends up going wrong and results in Ellie killing Owen while trying to interrogate him. This scene really shows how lost Ellie has become and how she's starting to lose complete control of herself while trying to get justice for Joel.

2 Abby: Biting Ellie's Fingers Off

In her final fight with Ellie, Abby bites two of Ellie's fingers off. This was somewhat Ellie's fault as she once again tried to get her revenge on Abby rather than forget about the past and try to move on. Abby shouldn't have gone so far as to bite Ellie.

She took away Ellie's ability to play the guitar which was one of the last forms of connection that she had with Joel. In a way, this helped Ellie finally put Joel to rest but it's something that she'll have to live with for the rest of her life.

1 Ellie: Killing Mel

Ellie killing Mel was one of the most shocking moments of the game as it was revealed that Mel was currently pregnant. It's one of the moments where Ellie comes to the realization that she might have taken things too far. It leads to the confrontation with Abby and the death of Jesse.

Mel wasn't exactly a fan-favorite character but she didn't deserve to die so brutally and while pregnant. Thankfully Abby was able to put this action aside and spare Dina who was also pregnant.
