Sony has revealed roughly 20 minutes worth of new information about The Last of Us 2,  the follow up to the PlayStation 3 hit. The information, revealed in a special Last of Us 2 State of Play, also includes a healthy dose of gameplay, helping hold fans over until the game's release next month.

Fans have been anxiously awaiting new information and Last of Us 2 gameplay for some time, specifically coming from official channels. The game is one of the most highly anticipated releases of this year and of this console generation. It seems to be a sort of capstone for the PS4, showing how far PS4 games have come since the console's debut.

A few months back, Last of Us 2 leaks spoiled the game for thousands of fans, revealing key details about the game's plot. Those that have managed to avoid the information until now are lucky, and one can hope that lasts until the game releases on June 19. However, spoiler culture has taken over the internet, so fans are going to want to be incredibly careful in the meantime.

Gameplay in The Last of Us 2 seems to have gotten a major overhaul, with all new ways to traverse the world, from previously-revealed jumping mechanics to the ability to use ropes. Fans also got a look at the Washington Liberation Front and Seraphites, two of the antagonistic factions Ellie will face during the game.

Fans will face new enemies like Sneakers and Shamblers, hopefully lending a bit more diversity to the game's combat encounters. Naughty Dog also teased new enemies in the demo, though those won't be revealed until the game launches. Humans also got some revamps, with new stealth mechanics making for a deeper combat experience, though it doesn't seem to have the depth seen in the Ghost of Tsushima gameplay. The same goes for allies, which will be more helpful this time around.

With any luck, The Last of Us 2 will be able to meet the quality of its predecessor, or possibly even surpass it. Fans only have a few short weeks before they find out, but so far, it looks to be a promising continuation of Ellie's story through post-apocalyptic America, with depth to both characters and the world they inhabit.

For now, fans can rewatch gameplay and comb through the other information that has been released. It does require a delicate balance to ensure that nothing is spoiled, but the game seems to be a love letter from Naughty Dog to its fans. Naughty Dog's crunch culture still has a long way to go, though, which will hopefully be corrected quickly.

The Last of Us 2 will release on June 19 for PS4.
