Since its announcement back in December 2016, The Last of Us 2 has easily become one of the most highly-anticipated releases of this generation, with thousands of fans clamoring to get their hands on Ellie and Joel's newest adventure. Recently, however, the game has hit a spate of bad luck, with significant story spoilers making their way online and ruining the title for a lot of fans who were eager to discover the next chapter of the now-iconic game series for themselves.

Yet, It seems many aren't letting the presence of the game's spoilers ruin it for them, with a new report surrounding The Last of Us 2's pre-orders showing that the release is on track to become one of the PlayStation's biggest to date. Speaking to CNET about the game, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan revealed that the game has already overtaken the pre-orders of one of the console's most successful titles in one of its most lucrative areas.

The game in question is none other than Marvel's Spider-Manwith The Last of Us 2 currently holding more pre-orders in Europe than the Webhead's adventure did at this stage prior to release. According to Ryan, "we hope this'll be a defining game for this generation," with the sales numbers indicating that PlayStation is likely to have the same commercial success that it did with its utterly iconic predecessor. Naturally, while many won't be going into the game fresh, it's great to hear that fans are still excited to jump into Ellie's new adventure regardless of the fact that it won't be as mysterious as some may hope.

Alongside discussing the significant number of pre-orders, Ryan was also quick to claim that the game will also run on PlayStation 5, hinting that the title's legacy is likely to run far beyond merely the PlayStation 4's dwindling life cycle. Of course, this aligns with recent reports that all major new PlayStation 4 games are being designed to run on the PlayStation 5, meaning that both Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us 2 will be playable on the console from the get-go.

Outside of Ellie and Joel's next post-apocalyptic outing, Sony is also gearing up for a major presentation later this week where it'll finally reveal PlayStation 5 gameplay. Many are expecting new reveals, astounding gameplay, and more from PlayStation's major showcase, especially as the company has been cryptically silent regarding what players can expect. Whatever shows up at the conference, it's clear to see that Sony is ready to make some major waves as it pushes further into 2020.

The Last of Us 2 will be available on June 19 exclusively for PlayStation 4.
