Rumors have persisted for quite some time that Naughty Dog's next project will be a remake of The Last of Us, built with the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 in mind. The Last of Us remake has yet to be officially revealed, but multiple reliable insiders have said that the project exists and could very well release this year. The latest rumor may provide an even more specific release date for The Last of Us remake on PS5.

Twitter user The Snitch, who has accurately leaked industry news in the past, has seemingly suggested that The Last of Us remake release date will be September 2. While this isn't outright stated by the tweet, the "PART 1" in the tweet seems to point in that direction, as it appears to be a nod to The Last of Us 2's official title, The Last of Us Part 2. The tweet also includes emojis of a video game controller and a PC, suggesting that The Last of Us remake won't be a PS5 exclusive when it launches.

Sony has been bringing more of its games to PC in recent years, including its biggest blockbusters. However, there's always been at least a couple of years between when a game has released on PlayStation and when it's been ported to PC. Since The Last of Us remake is a remake of an older project, perhaps the same rule won't apply to it, and it will be coming to both PC and PlayStation 5 when it launches. However, that's just speculation at this time, and since none of this information has even been verified, fans should take it all with a massive grain of salt for now.

If The Last of Us remake release date really is September 2 as rumored, it's a bit odd that the game wasn't shown during PlayStation's latest State of Play presentation. However, Sony wanted to keep the focus on virtual reality games and third-party titles at the latest State of Play, hence why its big first-party titles were missing in action. That being said, there's another big gaming event happening very soon where first-party PlayStation games could very well make an appearance.

Summer Game Fest is scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 9 at 11am PT. Host Geoff Keighley has said that the show will primarily focus on games that have already been announced, but that doesn't mean there won't be any reveals at all. Rumors suggest that PlayStation could have a major presence at the event by potentially revealing the God of War Ragnarok release date, so who's to say it won't also pop up to shine reveal The Last of Us remake and its release date as well.

Fans will just have to tune in to Summer Game Fest on June 9 at 11am PT to find out.

The Last of Us Part 1 is rumored to be in development.
