When The Last of Us first released, it did so with a multiplayer component called Factions. While it's safe to say that most Last of Us players paid more attention to the game's award-winning story, Factions still had its fans, and so many were hoping to see it return in The Last of Us 2. Unfortunately for those wanting more of the popular multiplayer mode, The Last of Us 2 launched as a single-player only experience. However, there may be hope yet for Factions fans.

Naughty Dog has confirmed that it is working on a new Factions experience, with rumors persisting since The Last of Us 2's launch about what form it may take. It was at first assumed that Factions would be released as an update for The Last of Us 2, but as more time has passed since the game's launch, the new narrative is that Factions will be a standalone experience. The latest rumor changes the story yet again, suggesting that Factions could instead be tied to the rumored Last of Us remake project.

As spotted by ComicBook, Michael Huber of Easy Allies recently tweeted that it's "sounding like" the Last of Us remake will include the new Factions mode. It's unclear where this information is coming from, and so fans should keep their expectations in check, and as always, take rumors with a grain of salt.

The Last of Us PS5 remake has been rumored for some time now, with its existence verified by reliable sources. Including the new Factions as part of the package could very well sweeten the pot and convince more gamers to pick up The Last of Us remake, but one has to imagine that there would be a ton of potential in a standalone, free-to-play version of the multiplayer mode following in the footsteps of the most popular multiplayer experiences on the market.

As it stands, nothing about The Last of Us remake has been announced in an official capacity, and it's unclear when more information may come to light. Most of the evidence points to the new Last of Us multiplayer experience, whatever form it may take, being standalone, though really all fans can do is speculate until the official reveal comes.

It's hard to say when The Last of Us PS5 remake or the rumored multiplayer mode will be shown to the public, but there's one thing fans of the franchise can look forward to with certainty, and that is its HBO adaptation. The Last of Us TV series will premiere on HBO at some point in 2023, though fans will have to stand by for more specific information on its premiere date and the like.

The Last of Us remake is rumored to be in development for PS5.
