One of the most praised games of the 2010's, The Last Of Us, takes place 20 years after a parasitic outbreak that sends the world into an apocalyptic downward spiral run by zombie-like monsters and martial law. The game focuses on a once loving, single-dad, Joel Miller, who is now a hardened smuggler. But in a twist of fate, Joel finds himself bonding with a little girl who may hold the answer to a cure.

When the world changes so drastically, the people change with it and survive in ways that they never imagined for themselves. Keep in mind, though, that alignments may shift between the two games, especially with the returning characters and what they've gone through in the emotionally devastating The Last of Us Part II. So for now, here's a look at the Dungeons and Dragons moral alignments of the main characters from the original The Last Of Us.

10 Joel – True Neutral

Joel lives for himself and for those that he cares about most. A smuggler and a drug dealer, he has no commitment to the law.

Throughout the first game, Joel does not actively seek to hurt others without cause, but he also doesn't help them if it puts himself or Ellie into danger. Joel is a survivor. He doesn't believe that how he lives is wrong, just that it's what he has to do to make it.

9 Tess – Chaotic Neutral

Tess is daring, intelligent, and capable. She can hold her own, but she doesn't pretend to be a good person. They live in a dog-eat-dog world, and she's willing to take risks and do what she has to in order to survive in it.

And by anything, Tess will do it even if it means hunting down an old boss and gunning him down, or going out to finish a dangerous deal by herself when her broody partner just wants to be left alone.

8 Ellie – Neutral Good

Despite a lifetime of grief, Ellie's empathy and desire to help is alive and well. Her first instinct is to save an "injured" Hunter luring them into a trap, and even though she knows the importance of survival and packing light, she still takes a toy from a store to make Sam feel better.

It is also heavily implied she would have sacrificed her life for the cure. Ellie may not follow laws, but she tries to be good in a broken world. However, her character and motivations change drastically by the time of The Last of Us Part II.

7 Robert – Neutral Evil

The neutral evil philosophy is to do whatever one has to in order to accomplish their goals, even if it's sneaky, cowardly, hurts others, or betrays friends. Robert is an arms dealer who had a business deal with Joel and Tess but instead of following through, he sold the weapons to the the Fireflies.

Rather than come clean, he puts a hit out on both Joel and Tess to have them killed so that he doesn't have to deal with the consequences of his greed.

6 Bill – True Neutral

Bill is a distrustful, grumpy man, and an old acquaintance of Joel's. He doesn't care about changing the world or taking a side, he just cares about staying alive.

Always out for himself and no one else, Bill has made a place for himself in a town that he booby traps to keep any other survivors away. He used to have a partner, Frank, but alienated him with his paranoia and anger issues.

5 Tommy – Lawful Neutral

Joel's idealistic little brother, Tommy joins the Fireflies, but leaves when he realizes that he was no longer allied with their cause. Tommy prefers to live by his own set of peaceful rules, and the perfect way to do that is by leading his own community with his wife, Maria.

Ultimately, all Tommy wants is a quiet, stable life. He is no longer searching for a way to fix the world; just his little piece of it.

4 Henry – Neutral Good

A survivor and caretaker for his little brother, Henry is strict and responsible, but he is also friendly and willing to open himself up to others. Though Sam's safety is Henry's number one priority, he allows Joel and Ellie to join them and seems genuinely happy for the company.

He makes the tough decision to leave them behind to ensure Sam's safety, but shortly after, he saves Joel's life once he knows that Sam is safe.

3 Maria – Lawful Good

It's arguable that any character in this universe is in the Lawful Good category, but in the terms of leading Jackson, Maria is devoted to the good of her community and does that with a firm but fair hand.

Far from a pushover, Maria is a strong and formidable leader. She enforces their ways when needed, but she is also willing to think things through, and adjust rules if she thinks it is best for the members of their settlement.

2 David - Lawful Evil

Leader of a group of cannibalistic survivors, David is clever and manipulative. He takes an immediate liking to Ellie for her survival abilities, but when she refuses to join him, he gleefully sets out to kill her, and at one point, attempts to rape her.

David clearly enjoys hurting others, but will try to manipulative them to joining his side first, so that he can hurt them as a consequence for breaking his rules.

1 Marlene – Chaotic Neutral

Marlene wants to save the world no matter the cost, and sometimes that makes her  look like the bad guy. She works outside of the law, and is willing to sacrifice Ellie (and potentially many others) in order to find a cure.

Though she works for a good cause, she is willing to ally herself with another group that kills in high numbers to work towards their own agenda that some may find equally cruel and oppressive as military rule.
