Fans of The Last of Us and The Last of Us 2 are celebrating Outbreak Day today, which in light of the COVID-19 pandemic has been renamed The Last of Us Day. The studio behind the popular series, Naughty Dog, is fueling this celebration with new announcements and merchandise for players.

For those that don't know, The Last of Us Day falls on September 26 to commemorate the day that the cordyceps infection reached its peak in the series' lore. Traditionally, Naughty Dog celebrates the day by releasing new content or information about The Last of Us. This year is special because a sequel to The Last of Us was finally released, meaning there's plenty for the studio to announce in relation to The Last of Us 2.

One big announcement is that Naughty Dog is giving away all The Last of Us 2 PSN themes and avatars for free on the PlayStation store until Monday. This includes the recent theme that shows Abby's boat on the beach from the final The Last of Us 2 menu screen. There are also free avatars for all the major characters including Ellie, Dina, Lev, Abby, and Jesse. Most of these digital perks only came free with deluxe editions or pre-orders of The Last of Us 2, so now is a great time to claim these free items for any fans who missed out.

Naughty Dog has saved plenty of announcements for The Last of Us Day, including the reveal that a The Last of Us tabletop board game is in the works. Other highlights have been a new limited-edition vinyl soundtrack, Ellie and Joel statues, posters, and a photo mode contest where players can win a The Last of Us-themed DualShock controller.

The current next major thing on The Last of Us calendar is an HBO television adaptation of the series. There's no word on when the TV show will go into production, but now that The Last of Us 2 has finally been released Creative Director Neil Druckmann said he will have more time to work on the series with Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin.

Fans can also hopefully expect more news about The Last of Us 2's upcoming multiplayer mode in the coming months. Naughty Dog scrapped the additional multiplayer mode for The Last of Us 2 during production due to time constraints, but the studios has announced it will be creating a multiplayer mode as a separate entity.

The Last of Us 2 is available now on PS4.
