The Last of Us 2 is as intense as a game can get, with brutal human enemies and terrifying infected foes littered throughout the entirety of the story. Turning on Grounded and Permadeath only makes things more difficult and nerve-wrecking, and while one streamer was succeeding, an untimely glitch ended their no death playthrough of The Last of Us 2.

In The Last of Us 2’s Grounded mode, permadeath is optional, as Grounded is hard enough as is. With players dying in 1-2 hits from all enemies, adding a save reset on top of that is even more punishing — though some gamers thrive on challenges like this. The permadeath options are chapter-based, act-based, and permanent. With Twitch streamer TLagPro wanting the toughest challenge possible, he set his permadeath option to permanent. With one death ending the Grounded run, the 20-hour playthrough instantly became more interesting.

Things were going well for this Last of Us 2 player, as he made use of several tricks and showed off great reflexes and accuracy throughout the entirety of the run. A little under a third of the way through the game, TLagPro encountered the Seraphites for the first time. An incredibly tough section for Grounded and normal mode players alike, the streamer took down the Seraphites after Ellie was hit with an arrow. Running for the door and shouting “come on” as Ellie tries to open it, Seraphites can be heard whistling behind her.

While the streamer and his viewers were likely bracing for impact about an arrow ending the run, or hoping Ellie would get through the door, an unfortunate bug ensured neither happened. Instead, The Last of Us 2’s protagonist falls through the floor, dying as she collapses through the white space below. The streamer is shocked by the turn of events, as the game is one of the most polished and bug-free games on the market. Unfortunately, this glitch ended TLagPro’s run in an unfair way that the player had no control of.

Comments on the post saw fellow The Last of Us 2 fans showing their support, with gamers like rmatherson saying that they would be upset if it happened to them. The letter “F” was used by BrennanSpeaks was used to pay respects, while car4soccer did the same. Jonny_Boy_FTW chooses to look on the bright side, reminding TLagPro that he was not at the very end. After all, if the streamer fell through the floor during the Rat King fight or Santa Barbara section, the glitch would have been even more disappointing.

While this is a memorable Grounded mode moment, it is memorable for all the wrong reasons. While it is unclear if the streamer will give this kind of run another go, nobody could really blame him if he lost interest.

The Last of Us 2 is available now on PS4.
