The original Last of Us featured a multiplayer mode that was actually fairly popular with the game's community, and so many were disappointed when The Last of Us 2 launched without multiplayer of any kind. However, Naughty Dog has said for some time that multiplayer would be added to the game at some point after launch, and now the very first gameplay footage of The Last of Us 2 multiplayer has leaked online.

The Last of Us 2 multiplayer gameplay footage is low quality and only 11 seconds long, but fans can still learn a lot from it nevertheless. Based on the footage, it appears as though The Last of Us 2 multiplayer mode, supposedly called Factions, will retain the arsenal that players have access to in the single player campaign, and will also let them play as recognizable characters from the story. It also looks like the maps will be areas familiar to those who have played through the campaign as well.

It's unclear exactly how this Last of Us 2 multiplayer leak happened, but this wouldn't be the first time that Naughty Dog's critically-acclaimed game was the victim of a major leak. As many may recall, huge Last of Us 2 plot twists leaked online months before the game was launched, along with many other details.

As for when The Last of Us 2 multiplayer will properly be revealed, that remains to be seen. However, it's quite possible that the reveal will take place later today. Sony's next State of Play event takes place at 1pm PT later today, and the company has said that it will focus on PS4 and PlayStation VR games. With no big PS5 announcements prepared for the next State of Play, it stands to reason that Sony could use it to officially reveal The Last of Us 2's Factions multiplayer mode, but that's just speculation at this time.

While the addition of a multiplayer mode is no doubt exciting to some Last of Us 2 fans, others may be hoping for news on potential Last of Us 2 story DLC. After all, the original Last of Us had the acclaimed Left Behind expansion to its name, so some are hoping to see something similar for The Last of Us 2. Unfortunately, Naughty Dog has made it clear that there are currently no plans to develop any Last of Us 2 story DLC, so fans shouldn't get their hopes up.

It seems Naughty Dog will instead be focusing on its first big PS5 project, whatever that may be. It's possible that it will be The Last of Us 3, or maybe it will be Uncharted 5. Alternatively, Naughty Dog may release a completely original IP instead. Whatever the case may be, fans shouldn't expect to find out more about it until some time after The Last of Us 2 multiplayer mode launches.

The Last of Us 2 is out now, exclusively for PlayStation 4.
