As many gamers will likely recall, The Last of Us: Part 2 was absent from The Game Awards 2018 due to the fact that Naughty Dog has been "hard at work" on the forthcoming action-adventure title's production, deciding it would reveal more "when the time is right". Although the developer doesn't have any fresh gameplay to show just yet, TLOU2 director Neil Druckmann chose to tease a "heart-wrenching" scene he and his team shot before breaking for a holiday vacation.

The Last of Us: Part 2 scene in question involves the characters of Ellie and Dina, as Druckmann shared an image of the actresses Ashley Johnson and Shannon Woodward in full motion capture regalia filming their parts for the upcoming game. In addition to the shoot being "heart-wrenching", it apparently was one of Naughty Dog's "most complicated" filming sessions so far. However, there's no official word as to what exactly goes down in the sequence.

Upon examining the image shared by Druckmann, one will notice that Johnson (Ellie) is holding a 12-string acoustic guitar while Woodward (Dina) sits cross-legged on the floor, with the former presumably serenading the latter. For those who have been keeping up with the development of The Last of Us: Part 2, one scene will likely come to mind almost immediately, and that's the game's debut trailer from PSX 2016.

Should this new image from Druckmann be in reference to the scene from The Last of Us: Part 2's first trailer, then it's possible that the reason why it's so "heart-wrenching" is due to the chance that Dina winds up getting killed, which would understandably lead to Ellie's murderous rampage. Also, with the director having teased it as being "one of the most complicated" shoots yet, perhaps it's because it involves Joel being dead, but still interacting with Ellie during and after the maelstrom. Of course, since there's no actual evidence to prove as much, it must be mentioned that this is merely speculation.

Taking all of this into account, it definitely looks as if Druckmann's latest teaser is designed to keep The Last of Us: Part 2 fans guessing the fate of Ellie and Dina, as Naughty Dog has yet to fill in a lot of the backstory of what's going to happen in the sequel. The director also stated that there will be "more to come next year", so here's to hoping that we not only get some more details about the game's story, but also a solid release date come 2019.

The Last of Us: Part 2 is currently in development for PlayStation 4.
