"Game is gorgeous," says Neil Druckmann about the new Gears 5.

Late Saturday evening Neil Druckmann, director of The Last of Us 2, tweeted out his thanks for the advanced copy of Gears 5 from The Coalition studio head Rod Fergusson. In the tweet, Druckmann teases an out of focus image of what appears to JD Fenix.

Neil has been working on the much anticipated Last of Us 2, of which he tweeted a photo finishing up filming on April 18th. "Tears were shed..." Druckmann reports. Although principle photography has been wrapped, Neil likely has a long road before the game is released. Sony is still waiting to announce an official release date for the game, which is likely the reason Druckmann is taking a much needed breather from work.

In the meantime, Gears 5  is set to release early this September. Gears 5 will follow Corporal Kait Diaz, an Outsider turned Gear. Marcus and the rest of the Fenix family will be present in the game, but the main campaign will be centered around Corporal Diaz. Kait's main mission will be to uncover her family's dark past, while yet another war looms over what's left of the planet Sera. The campaign is promised to be intense and beautiful.

Rod Fergusson moved over to The Coalition after working to help finish BioShock: Infinite. Fergusson champions that he learned a great deal about story telling working with the team on Infinite. He had planned to use the skills on future projects, and it sounds like he's followed through on that promise.

In an interview with Screen Rant earlier this week, Rod talked about how it was a big priority for him to change the name of Gears of War to just Gears. The attempt first started on Gears of War 4, but the marketing team wasn't having it. Rod dropped his case, but was able to bring it back up for fifth installment. The timing was right, and with the side projects Gears Pop! and Gears Tactics, the team admitted the name sounded too wordy with the additional "of War."

Gears 5 launches on PC and Xbox One on September 10, 2019.
