When it comes to zombies, video games tend to lean in a decidedly non-kid-friendly direction, with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Zombies mode being the most recent example. Luckily, anyone interested in a more lighthearted zombie apocalypse will soon be able to get their hands on one, as an action-adventure game based on the TV show The Last Kids on Earth is coming out next year.

The Last Kids on Earth and the Staff of Doom is a collaboration between publisher Outright Games, developer Stage Clear Studios, and Atomic Cartoons, the studio behind the animated Netflix series. Today, these companies announced that the game will be released sometime this spring for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. It will be playable on the PS5 and Xbox Series X as well, though the wording in the press release suggests it won’t receive dedicated next-gen ports.

Featuring a brand new story, the game will let fans play as the show’s heroic team of young survivors as they search for the missing pieces of the titular Staff of Doom in order to prevent the summoning of Rezzoch the Ancient, Destructor of Worlds. According to Outright, up to four players will be able to explore “massive levels” and fight hordes of zombies and monsters in both local and online co-op. Furthermore, the game will feature the original voice cast from the Netflix series reprising their roles.

The Last Kids on Earth has become rather popular as a franchise, with the original book series by Max Brallier selling over 5 million copies, while the Netflix adaptation recently aired its third season. So it seems like they’ll be plenty of fans looking forward to an interactive take on its monster-filled world.

The Last Kids on Earth and the Staff of Doom will launch in spring 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
