Academy Award-winning actress Alicia Vikander, star of the upcoming Tomb Raider movie reboot, admits to playing the games in secret during her childhood.
Ever since Hollywood turned its eye onto video games, movie adaptations of popular games haven’t been very good to say the least. One common theme that comes up quite frequently in video game movies is the casting of actors and actresses who aren’t fans of the franchise, something that generally doesn’t sit well with gamers. For the upcoming Tomb Raider movie reboot however, fans (and the movie’s producers) can rest a little easier, as the film’s lead actress is already well-versed in everything related to the series.
In a new interview with Total Film, Alicia Vikander, the actress who will be taking on the role of Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider movie reboot, admitted that she’s been a long-time fan of the series – even going as far as playing it in secret when her parents had specifically forbade her. As Vikander explained:
“I kept it secret – I didn’t have many girlfriends who shared that interest, but I really loved it. I did play Tomb Raider back then, even though my parents said I wasn’t allowed to.”
In addition to her love of the Tomb Raider series, Vikander has stated that she is more than ready for what will be a very physically-challenging take on Lara Croft. Regarding the matter, Vikander said:
“I danced for many years. I really enjoy the aspect of being able to work with my physicality. In one way, I can probably do that unconsciously. But in this, it’s going to be a whole other level. It’s always wonderful when you get the chance to try things out that you never thought you would be able to do, to push yourself and your boundaries.”
Vikander has apparently had her eye on a video game movie role for quite some time now, and had to actually turn down the opportunity to star alongside her boyfriend, Michael Fassbender, in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie. Interestingly, Fassbender has admitted that he has never played the Assassin’s Creed games before being cast, so it’s probably a good thing that Vikander held out for Tomb Raider.
As for the film itself, other than taking inspiration from Crystal Dynamic’s rebooted Tomb Raider series, not much is currently known about it. But given that Rise of the Tomb Raider recently won the WGA Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Video Game Writing”, fans will be glad to know that the movie is headed in the right direction.
Having said all that, it’s still a bit too early to say whether the upcoming Tomb Raider movie reboot will be any good. At any rate, if Alicia Vikander’s admissions are anything to go by, at least the movie’s producers have cast the perfect actress for the role of Lara Croft.
The Tomb Raider movie has yet to receive a release date, but we will keep you posted on any news and announcements.
