Todd Philip's Joker: Folie a Deux is at the beginning stages of production, with Lady Gaga on set as Harley Quinn. Little is known about the actor and songwriter’s adaptation of the character beyond the sequel having the added complexity of being a musical, and fans who are curious about how Gaga's Harley Quinn will be different from Margot Robbie's might want to consider that aspect.

Comic book fans are aware of various character adaptations within a concept described as the multiverse, so the same can be said about comic book movies regarding embracing a character in ways that make them different from each other. As a result, Joker: Folie a Deux marks the first time audiences will get to see a live-action version of Harley Quinn that differentiates itself from Robbie. Despite the mysterious details of the film, expectations are high. The decision on how Philips and Gaga plan to differentiate themselves is currently being worked out, as the actor reveals being on set.

Gaga posted a photo of herself on Instagram with a bouquet, expressing her gratitude to the Academy for nominating her song “Hold My Hand,” which was written for Top Gun: Maverick. She describes her appreciation for music and cinema, but at the end of the post, the actor wrote, “on set filming now,” followed by “big love to little monsters” with a joker card emoji. This insinuates that she is on the Joker: Folie a Deux set. It was reported that Joaquin Phoenix was unsure of a Joker sequel ever happening, but that later changed.

It could be that Lady Gaga was the missing link to Phoenix's uncertainty at the time, as the name of the sequel not only suggests a mental disorder affecting two or more people, but the narrative is also a logical progression of events following the first film, which ended with Joker locked away in Arkham Asylum. In her origins, Harley Quinn started as a psychiatrist at Arkham who treated mentally ill patients, which is how she stumbled upon the Joker. Luckily, Joker 2 cinematographer Lawrence Sher describes Lady Gaga as perfect for Harley Quinn in the upcoming adaptation.

Gaga's Harley Quinn version is likely to be much more grounded, similar to Phoenix's Joker. However, James Gunn confirmed Robbie's Harley Quinn is returning, so there will be different interpretations for audiences to enjoy depending on if they prefer the grounded approach, the comic book approach, or both.

Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 4, 2024.
