The next game from Rockstar Games, L.A. Noire, is going to be a highly anticipated game by the gaming community – it ranked in our most anticipated games of 2011 – but what Team Bondi wants players to know is that their latest offering will not be a game that’s geared toward just one audience.
In fact, L.A. Noire will be a game that everyone can play, no matter their “label” among the gaming community. Brandon McNamara of Team Bondi went on record with Paste Magazine, saying Noire will bring in gamers of all kinds, stating:
“The goal wasn’t to make a punishingly difficult experience for newcomers, or a game that felt too easy for the hardcore. Proficiency in interrogations can reward the player in a number of ways: a new clue may surface, an expedited path to the end of the case may present itself, perhaps a side story of a character unfolds.
“We want to reward and encourage players to strive for the truth in every interrogation, but we understand that, sometimes, you just get it wrong. And that’s OK.”
Interrogation gameplay was revealed earlier in the month and takes advantage of the MotionScan technology Team Bondi is implementing to ensure facial expressions are as detailed as possible. As fun as it is to see interrogation gameplay in any kind of crime investigation game, what about gun fights? They give cops guns, right? McNamara also shares his thoughts on the inevitable violence protagonist Cole Phelps will encounter as he rises through the ranks of LAPD.
“There will be times where you’ll have to get your hands dirty, though…Phelps has little choice but to roll up his sleeves and pursue justice using deadly force. It becomes a balancing act between introducing players to a radically different type of gameplay and also maintaining a level of comfort and familiarity.”
Non-violent solutions like shooting warning shots are also available to Phelps if the player chooses to go the higher road and avoid a possible scandal or something similar.
L.A. Noire is going to add to Rockstar’s pedigree of delivering games that immerse the player into the world in an almost seamless fashion, allowing the world to tell a majority of the story without a single word being spoken. What better place to apply that storytelling method next than in the world of 1940s Los Angeles? Even from the little bits of footage that has been made available to the public, L.A. Noire has many of the qualities that will net it Game of the Year 2011. Would you agree?
