Kratos Doing What He Does Best in New 'Mortal Kombat' Trailer

Kratos Mortal Kombat Trailer

Though PS3 players of Mortal Kombat are looking forward to reconnecting with some of their old favorites, one of the fighters they are most looking forward to playing is Kratos from the God of War series.

Revealed at last year’s VGAs as a bonus character for the PS3 version of the game, Kratos has only had brief looks shown at his move set and his character design. Now, with a new trailer in tow, NetherRealm Studios is showing just how perfectly the former God of War fits in with the likes of Mileena and Raiden.

Fans of God of War will be happy to know that not only will Kratos be joining the Mortal Kombat fold, but he is bringing many of his signature weapons and moves with him. Those on display in the trailer, including the head of Medusa, the Nemean Cestus he stole from Hercules and the Bow of Apollo, make for some furious fighting action as Kratos switches between them.

Also being included as part of Kratos’ aesthetic will be the speed-ramping seen in the more intense cutscenes from God of War and the quick time events that require timely button presses to execute a particularly brutal action. The game, when Kratos is being utilized, becomes more like God of War then it does Mortal Kombat, but with Kratos’ bloody aspirations it’s hard to tell the difference.

The verdict is still out on whether the Xbox 360 version of MK will be receiving their own bonus character (at one point many thought it might be a character from the Gears of War universe), but seeing Kratos in action should give multi-console owners a clear idea of which version to pick up.

Those who might not have access to a PS3, however, have nothing to worry about as Mortal Kombat boasts a substantial roster comprised of characters from the series’ early roots and new favorites. On top of that, the Challenge Tower and new game mechanics, should be enough content to make the absence of Kratos on your version the tiniest bit more bearable. However, if you have a PS3, that version is going to be the way to go.

What do you think of the moves on display in this trailer for Kratos? Any other key items or concepts from the God of War series that you would like to see included?

Mortal Kombat releases April 19, 2011 for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
