Konami has opened up the Silent Hill floodgates by inviting studios and creators to pitch their ideas for a game based on the series, with promises that each idea will be heard by the company. Towards the tail end of 2022, Konami announced it would be reviving Silent Hill with a number of projects currently in development, including a remake of the iconic 2001 sequel. After years of waiting and speculation, fans will finally get to experience some new stories related to the titular ghost town.
Things don't end there, either. Along with the remake, Silent Hill f, Townfall, Ascension, and a new film from writer and director Christophe Gans, there were rumors last year of three more Silent Hill projects yet to be announced. In short, fans of the dormant survival horror franchise have a heck of a lot to look forward to, especially after the loss of Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro's P.T. back in 2015. Alongside all this, it looks as though Konami, which owns the Silent Hill IP, had some words to say about any potential upcoming games in the series.
In a recent interview with IGN, Motoi Okamoto, producer for the Silent Hill series, said that Konami is interested in other studios pitching their ideas and the number of SH projects is expected to grow. However, because the franchise's return was a secret until a few months ago, Okamoto said the team was unable to put a call-out for any other ideas at the time. But now that the cat is well and truly out of the bag, creative types are invited to send over their pitches, which means the Japanese company is going all out for the series. Okamoto also promises that every pitch will be heard, adding that "we're all ears."
This opens up so much potential for new games, which means things have gone from one extreme to the other, from no games at all since 2012's Downpour and Book of Memories to a veritable potential onslaught of upcoming projects. Among all the games and other media coming out, most people will likely be paying attention to Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 remake, which has apparently been in development since 2019, to see how the Layers of Fear developer handles a modern take on the influential PS2 sequel.
With the original Silent Hill helping to define survival horror, after Resident Evil laid the groundwork for the genre in the mid-90s, many fans are no doubt looking forward to the series' revival after so many years. It's also going to be interesting to see which studios come forward with their own ideas for an entry.
