With Death Stranding, Kojima introduced what he has dubbed the strand genre. This refers to single-player games that nevertheless have cooperative multiplayer elements woven into it them. It could be argued that he is not the originator of this genre, as other games have had similar elements, including FromSoftware titles. Though not much is known about the upcoming Xbox game, including its name, from what Kojima has commented, it does not appear that the game will be another entry in the strand genre.

Kojima recently spoke a bit about the upcoming Xbox game, revealing that he wanted to make it for a long time, but the technology wasn't available to do so. He believes that his new Xbox game is "like a new medium" and that if he can pull it off, it will revolutionize both the gaming industry and the movie industry. This seems like a natural evolution for Kojima, who has shown a strong passion for the movie industry his entire career. Nevertheless, from his words, it does not seem like Kojima is looking to tread old ground or revisit existing ideas such as the strand genre. Instead, it strongly suggests that the creator is attempting something entirely new and revolutionary. With this in mind, it is worth remembering that Kojima is a creator who is very proud of his work, and he isn't afraid to talk it up. Hence, while the upcoming game likely will feature great innovation, it wouldn't be unexpected to discover that Kojima has been hyperbolizing just how revolutionary it is.

The Xbox game isn't the only mystery surrounding Kojima Productions presently. Although Death Stranding 2 has been revealed, the trailer left gamers with many questions. Sam Bridges is much older, and Fragile saves what appears to be an infant version of Lou. Fans will have to be patient to see what the studio is brewing.

Death Stranding is available on PC, PS4, and PS5.
