During his talk at the 2016 D.I.C.E Summit, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima states that he still wants to work with Guillermo del Toro and that his next game will be ‘big’.
Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima and director Guillermo del Toro were the final speakers on the bill for the 2016 D.I.C.E Summit, and their conversation was as interesting as it was enlightening. Between talking about films, his interest in making a VR horror game, and anime, Kojima dropped some new information regarding his next video game project.
When asked why make another big game instead of trying out something else, Kojima stated that after making video games for over 30 years, he’s developed a big fan base around the world that expects big things from him. Rather than take time off to make an indie game or a film, Kojima said that he felt that he should keep making his trademark blockbuster video games sooner rather than later, which is why he relaunched his Kojima Productions studio.
“At first, I thought I’d take a year to make a small indie game, or a movie, or write a novel. But then I talked with friends and acquaintances from all over the world and pretty much everyone said the same thing… sorry, but you don’t have time for that, you have to go back to working on something big, because that’s what people expect from you.”
On the topic of his upcoming Sony-exclusive video game, Kojima has said that he has all the creative freedom he wants right now and is trying to make a big game with a small team. He also hopes that his new game will connect with all his fans, but he won’t compromise his vision just to sell more copies:
“I feel extremely free right now. I am trying to make a big game with a very small team. I am doing exactly what I want to do,”
“I have no intention of changing anything in order make it sell more, I want to create something that I want to play.”
While not much is known about Kojima’s upcoming game other than it being a PlayStation 4 and PC title, his plans to make another big game is great news for all gamers. Whether it’ll be as good or as big as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain remains to be seen, but it appears that Kojima is in the right frame of mind to create something just as compelling.
After time, the conversation soon shifted from video games and towards Kojima and Guillermo del Toro’s friendship. While their last collaborative project, the abruptly canceled Silent Hills, didn’t go anywhere, the pair are open for another collaboration, but no specifics were given regarding what their potential new project would be. Given how well-received the P.T demo was, and how Norman Reedus is still keen on working with Kojima and del Toro on a new project, perhaps another Kojima-del Toro-Reedus collaboration is on the cards sometime in the future.
Considering that fans everywhere are still upset over the cancellation of Silent Hills, and Kojima is planning some big and exciting things for the future, maybe it’s time for Guillermo del Toro to have another go at making video games.
