Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is headed for theaters next month. Ahead of this theatrical release, the film debuted at the London International Film Festival, where director Rian Johnson held a Q&A about the adventures of Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc, revealing more details about the private detective.

Knives Out 2 is set to feature the return of Benoit Blanc, the detective who took on the dysfunctional Thrombey family in 2019's Knives Out. Blanc is something of an enigma himself and not much time is spent on Blanc himself, but Benoit is a central pillar of the franchise Johnson is constructing and the centrepiece through which all of these films will connect. Benoit Blanc is a sort of modern-day Sherlock Holmes - a detective of amazing quality who only rarely brings his personal life into his line of work.

According to Slash Film, Knives Out 2 features a small scene of Benoit Blanc's personal life. As it turns out, Benoit is coupled up (though the actor portraying his boyfriend is unknown), though the film doesn't entirely make this clear, with the character only referring to him as "Blanc" as a term of endearment. The moment is not focused on, and it's simply another Knives Out character detail of Blanc's. In an after-film Q&A, Johnson clarified that the character is indeed intended to be Blanc's lover and that Blanc identifies as gay. "Yes, he obviously is," Rian Johnson stated, firmly, when asked if Blanc was gay or if the characters were simply friends.

Knives Out 2 Glass Onion

The revelation may seem small, but it plays right into the themes of the original Knives Out. The original film plays with the themes of privilege; all of the antagonists are part of a rich, white family who tries to weaponize Marta's (Ana de Armas) immigrant status and use it against her when they discover she has inherited all of their patriarch's money. By revealing Benoit Blanc as gay, both main characters are members of marginalized groups.

Glass Onion seems to be following in the footsteps of its predecessor. A new Knives Out 2 teaser showcased the characters and plot of the film. Set in a private Greek villa owned by a billionaire, Miles Bron (Edward Norton), the film is going to explore and satirize other privileged groups such as influencers and YouTube stars.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery hits theaters on Thanksgiving for one week only, and is available on Netflix starting December 23, 2022.
