The Star Wars franchise has had a rough run of it lately, with several voicing their dislike of The Last Jedi and the Solo movie underperforming in the box office. Perhaps this will all change when The Rise of Skywalker premieres later this year, but one spin on the franchise all would almost indubitably welcome is a Knights of the Old Republic movie. And it seems more of a question of when than if, considering that a script for the first movie in a trilogy is almost finished.

According to three anonymous sources reportedly close to the project, a script for the first movie of a Knights of the Old Republic trilogy is almost finished. It is currently being written by Laeta Kalogridis who is best known for her work on Shutter Island and Terminator: Genisys. Considering fans have clamored for this story to be adapted to film for some time, this is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

This comes after Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy implied that a Knights of the Old Republic movie was being considered by the company. And exciting as all of this is, hopeful fans may want to keep their expectations checked, as several things are likely still in the air. For example, Lucasfilm could simply reject Kalogridis' script after deciding not to pursue the venture any further.

It's also worth mentioning that Lucasfilm has shaken up how it is doing releases, which seems to be due to fears of oversaturating the market with Star Wars movies. This approach, combined with Rian Johnson's rumored trilogy, this Knights of the Old Republic trilogy, and whatever project that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are working on, likely means some may not make the cut, to the chagrin of some and the joy of others.

knights of the old republic 3 story revealed

Kalogridis, Lucasfilm, and Disney have all not responded to requests for comments, but the Mouse House has recently confirmed that another Star Wars movie won't release until 2022. Even if two trilogies are currently in the works (assuming that Johnson or Benioff and Weiss are working on this Knights of the Old Republic trilogy), that means it'll be years before anything is seen on the big screen.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is available on Android and iOS devices, PC, the original Xbox, and it is playable on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One via their respective backward compatibility features.
