It’s been known that Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe will see a few new bells and whistles compared to the original Wii version, and now Nintendo has confirmed that one of those will be online support for the Samurai Kirby mini-game. Extras like this will ensure both new and longtime fans will have something to look forward to when the Switch remake of Return to Dream Land debuts next month. On top of a HD update to the visuals, the remake of the 2011 Wii platformer will introduce a few new additions to the colorful 2D gameplay. These include new copy abilities for Kirby to utilize, such as the Mecha ability which lets players fight enemies with both melee and ranged attacks, as well as the recently-revealed Sand ability that allows Kirby to shift into various shapes to give him an edge in battle. The latest take on the series’ tradition of reflex-based mini-games, it pits up to four players in a quick-draw samurai fight where the player who reacts first wins. This time, though, players will also have the option to go online and try to set the fastest record against 99 other players.

Although more competitive players will likely enjoy this, some fans may be disappointed to see a mini-game receive online support while the 4-player co-op, one of Return to Dream Land’s biggest features, will be limited to local play in the Deluxe version. That being said, it’s possible that what’s been revealed so far won’t be the full extent of online support that the game will ultimately have, and Nintendo could potentially add online co-op at some point in a future update.

Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe caps off a big year for Nintendo’s adorable pink puff ball. The game will be the third major release for the series in 11 months, following the record-breaking launch of Kirby and the Forgotten Land and the debut of the party game spinoff Kirby’s Dream Buffet. As for what the future brings, however, that remains to be seen, as Nintendo has yet to reveal what’s next for Kirby.

Luckily for fans of the company in general, Nintendo has some exciting games set to come out in 2023, like Fire Emblem Engage, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Pikmin 4, and those are just the ones that have been revealed thus far. With a new Nintendo Direct hopefully arriving soon, more titles are bound to be revealed, and with any luck, Kirby won’t be left out.

Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe launches on February 24 for Nintendo Switch.
