Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe starts like any other adventure in the franchise. Kirby, Waddle Dee, and King Dedede are chasing after some food while Meta Knight reads in the grass. All of a sudden, a warp hole emerges, and out of it comes a spaceship that crashes.

The four heroes go to investigate the crash to find Magolor, an otherworldly being who asks for their assistance in getting his ship’s parts back. That’s the premise, and clearly, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe doesn’t have a complete narrative, and the gameplay isn’t mind-blowing either. It’s been over a decade since the original release, and things have changed, but a few more things could use some tweaking via patches.

7 Add AI Partners

One of the biggest attractions of this new remaster is the co-op feature. Two-player couch co-op is rare these days, but four-player co-op is even rarer. The game is perfectly enjoyable as a single-player experience, but there is one thing that would make the adventure sweeter for solo players.

The game needs to add AI partners back into the mix. Past games in the Kirby series allow Kirby to pass his powers along to an AI partner, so this feature should make a return in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe.

6 Add Online Co-Op

As great as the couch co-op in this game is, there are some issues. There is no online support for multiplayer in any aspect of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. How hard would it be to add online co-op with friends or strangers?

Being able to play through the campaign with friends would be cool online, but it would also be great to tackle the mini-games. There are so many to play around with, and the remaster added and tweaked a bunch of them. It’s a shame there is no way to share this experience outside of one’s home beside the leaderboards, which do have an online option.

5 Allow Access To Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler Right Away

There are a lot of new features and tweaks made to this remaster. Veteran players of the Wii original are probably the most interested in checking out Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler. This mode can be accessed after players beat the game.

It will take them through levels as Magolor, who is trying to get his powers back after being sucked into another black hole. And yes, it still supports a co-op mode, although only as different Magolor clones. It’s the best part of the package, which is why it’s odd that Nintendo hid it away in the back half of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. A patch should allow players to start this mode right away.

4 Add More Difficulties

Magolor Mode in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Technically, there are difficulty modes in the game, but not in the traditional sense. One new addition to the remaster is the Helper Magolor mode. This will have Magolor appear to help players randomly if they are about to run out of health or if they fall into a hole. It’s more like an assist mode in other games than a difficulty level though.

A traditional difficulty mode will unlock after players beat the game with 70% of the completed. This Extra Mode will make things harder. It would be helpful if this mode was unlocked right away for players looking to boost the challenge of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, which is already too easy even without the Helpful Magolor mode activated.

3 Suck With Copy Abilities

Sucking an enemy in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

One of the more annoying aspects of the game’s mechanics is Kirby’s sucking ability. He cannot have a Copy ability in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe equipped and suck enemies at the same time. Players have to get rid of their powers if they want to suck up new enemies.

This would be fine if there weren’t blocks in Kirby’s way that he has to suck in order to remove. These stone pillars and blocks have to be removed with Kirby’s mouth exclusively. Nintendo could add a way to put the Copy ability away without players needing to actually discard it. This would help refine the gameplay and make it less clunky.

2 Add A Better Retrospective To The Series

Past Adventures Gallery in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

The final new addition to Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe allows players to look back on Kirby’s past with a literal gallery called Past Adventures. Here players can read up on the brief plot summaries of games like Kirby: Planet Robobot or Kirby and the Forgotten Land. This, on paper, is a good idea that has existed in other Kirby games in the series too.

However, this is a minimal effort on Nintendo’s part. They could do so much more to help players relive the Kirby franchise or show it to them for the first time. This gallery could include when the games were released and what platforms they were on, for starters. They could also go the extra mile and show players trailers or gameplay footage. As it stands now, Past Adventures is kind of a wasted opportunity.

1 Controller Settings

Controller settings in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Players can change how the controller operates between different presets. There is Type A, which is the default, and Type B. It is a recommended tip to switch to Type B in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe as it switches the jump button to B and the attack button to Y.

For platformer veterans, the Type B setup should feel more natural. It’s nice that Nintendo allowed one way to switch things around, but they could also do more. They could patch in a way for players to program every button as they please, for example.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe was released on February 24, 2023, and is available on Switch.
