Kirby 64, the sole Kirby game for Nintendo 64, recently released on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, the console's premium online service. The game is a bit of an oddball for the series, being more similar to the Kirby's Dream Land games than regular series titles, which tend to be based on Kirby Super Star instead. Nevertheless, it still has its fans after all these years, and its rerelease may see it earn some more.

The game's defining feature is its inclusion of power combos. Normally, Kirby can eat his enemies and steal their abilities, but in Kirby 64, he can also throw a stolen ability at an enemy, combining that ability with the enemy's as a mix of two different abilities. Although there are only seven abilities in the game, they can be combined in any pair, resulting in a total of 28 unique powers. Part of the fun of Kirby 64 is discovering what the combinations are, but for the player that might need a little extra help, here are the best power combos in the game.

10 Ice + Needle: Snowflake

Hold down the attack button, and Kirby will literally freeze in place. Sharp spikes gradually crystallize around him, forming a huge snowflake. Kirby can't move while the button is held down, and it takes a few seconds to reach its full size, but it covers a large area from moderate safety, since most enemies can't bypass the icicles.

This combo even has the ice ability bonus of freezing enemies into ice cubes that can be pushed into other enemies, although Kirby has to cancel the snowflake in order to go push them.

9 Spark + Stone: Electric Tether

With this combo, pressing the attack button sends a boulder flying forward, attached to Kirby by a line of electricity. It bounces around a little, and when it reaches the end of its tether, it returns to Kirby.

This attack covers a wide area, including the electric line itself. It moves rapidly, but it's a little hard to control. On the other hand, skilled players can avoid the rock when it comes back, extending the duration of the move. It feels a little bit like a yo-yo.

8 Cutter + Spark: Double-Edged Sword

Cutter combo abilities often result in a bladed weapon, and this may be the most popular: Kirby holds a double-edged sword made of lightning. It's often compared to Darth Maul's lightsaber, although it's more likely a reference to a similar weapon from anime Mobile Suit Gundam.

Pressing the attack button readies the sword, and pressing it again makes Kirby skillfully flourish the blade, hitting enemies in front and behind him. It's a great way to attack targets rapidly at close range, and he can extend its reach by moving during the attack, but he can't float while the sword is out, so a bad jump can be dangerous.

7 Cutter + Needle: Bear Trap

What do you get when you cross a spike and a blade? According to Kirby 64, the answer is a vicious-looking trap, effective against deadly beasts. Holding the attack button makes Kirby's arms extend outwards, sprouting jagged blades.

This is only the setup; releasing the button again springs the trap, causing him to slam his bladed arms together above him. The strengths of this attack are its speed, and the wide area it covers. The arms of the trap even hurt enemies while it hasn't triggered yet.

6 Needle + Stone: Drill

Holding down the attack button causes Kirby to thrust an arm forward, transforming into a drill. The drill pulls Kirby forward, and when the button is released, he stops moving and launches the drill forward as a projectile.

The projectile version of the attack is the real winner, since it's a quick, reliable weapon that travels a long distance. The only downside to this weapon is the possibility for the forward-moving first stage of the attack to pull Kirby into a hazard.

5 Bomb + Burn: Fireworks

Pressing the attack button once detonates Kirby like a firework, popping him up in the air and releasing a colorful blast around him. The first blast doesn't extend very far, but pressing the button a second and third time generates further explosions that reach farther each press. The third consecutive fireworks blast covers most of the screen.

This is a great way to cause a lot of damage from relative safety, but it does take a little time to trigger the full sequence of three blasts. It also leaves Kirby slightly vulnerable after the attack, though players can use it to gain a little midair height.

4 Cutter + Burn: Flaming Sword

Another sword-type weapon similar to Cutter + Spark, this combo causes Kirby to unsheathe a large flaming sword (from his mouth). While the sword is out, Kirby can do a wide sweeping attack, but it has an extra function as well.

Tapping up makes Kirby point the sword straight upward, which can hit enemies directly above him. From there, pressing the attack button makes him throw the whole sword as a large projectile attack. The utility of this weapon makes it more valuable than the Cutter + Spark sword. Even though he still can't fly with the sword out, quick players can throw it away if they need to correct course after a bad jump.

3 Ice + Spark: Refrigerator

With this combo, Kirby turns into a refrigerator, and lobs three pieces of frozen food in an arc. As an attack, it's nothing special: the food fires slowly, in an arcing path that requires some aim. Its value comes from its unique effect. Kirby can launch a frozen dinner, press the attack button to cancel the transformation, and run forward to eat the food, restoring a point of health.

This is easy to do and has no use limit at all, allowing players to heal fully any time they have this combo, even during boss battles. Perhaps the spirit of this handy power exists in modern Kirby as well, in the form of Vending Mode from Forgotten Land.

2 Bomb + Bomb: Seeker Missiles

In Kirby 64, it's possible to make a combo power from two of the same ability. Most of these aren't quite as good as powers made from two different abilities, possibly because they're so easy to make — just leaving and re-entering an area makes all the enemies respawn to be eaten again. Double Bomb is a notable exception.

Holding down the attack button makes Kirby load up one, two, then three homing missiles, which fly rapidly and detonate against enemies. The homing effect isn't especially strong, but it's usually enough since most enemies don't move very much. The attack is quick, effective, and easy to obtain, easily making it one of the best in the game.

1 Bomb + Cutter: Exploding Shuriken

The Cutter ability is a little awkward on its own, but makes up some of the strongest combos in the game. At the pinnacle of function and form is the exploding shuriken. Pressing the attack button has Kirby throw the shuriken, which travels so quickly through the air it cannot be seen in motion. If it connects, the enemy freezes in place for a half-second as its life flashes before its eyes, and then explodes.

This move is fast, deadly, has excellent range, and even works well underwater. Many of Kirby's attacks are greatly slowed by water, but the shuriken moves so quickly, the difference is minimal, making this a great weapon choice for the boss of Aqua Star.
