Updated 6/4: Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning has been officially confirmed.

Original story follows.

Remastered games are not exactly uncommon these days, however, video game remasters can turn out well. Sometimes it gives a hidden gem or lesser-known game the opportunity for another chance in the spotlight with the hopes for a brighter shine. In this case, it seems that a remaster for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, titled Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, could be given that chance in August of this year.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was an open-world RPG developed by 38 Studios that released on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 back on February 7, 2012. On top of it being published by EA, the game also had several people of note working on it, including author R.A. Salvatore, Todd McFarlane of Spawn fame, and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion's lead designer Ken Rolston. While the game was praised for combat mechanics and character customization features, the game failed commercially and ultimately caused 38 Studios to shut down.

However, it appears that Kingdoms of Amalur is getting a second chance sooner than anticipated. On Tuesday night, a leak on the Xbox Live Marketplace revealed that Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning would be coming with a release date of August 11, 2020. Being published by THQ Nordic, the store page for the remaster states that players can expect the base game and all DLC with improved graphical fidelity.

THQ Nordic acquired the Kingdoms of Amalur IP from 38 Studios back in September of 2018. THQ Nordic later stated that while it was interested in the possibility of sequels in the franchise, it would first need approval from EA before making a remaster of the original title. With this leak now in the public eye, it seems the publisher managed to receive that approval.

It's currently unclear whether or not Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning will be coming to other platforms besides Xbox One. Timed platform exclusivity has become relatively commonplace, so it's not out of the realm of possibility for this title to be on Xbox One exclusively for a window of time. While currently, the platforms remain unconfirmed, players will be sure to confirm their excitement when this fantasy epic makes its return.
