After officially crossing swords with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and reigniting the debate over the fairness of online passes, it's put up or shut up time for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. The offspring of Curt Schilling's 38 Studios' collaboration with Big Huge Games and Electronic Arts, Kingdoms of Amalur releases on February 7 and takes us to a new universe on the depths of despair created by New York Times best-selling fantasy writer R.A. Salvatore and brought to life by legendary Elder Scrolls designer Ken Rolston.
It's also pretty gory. As the latest launch trailer for the game demonstrates, Kingdoms is looking to be the Fable-meets-God of War offering that Fable's detractors have always asked for. There's plenty of sword thrashing, spell casting, and troll bashing to go around, and most of it ends in a good old fashioned blood splashing.
Of course, as we also noted as far back as our PAX East demo, combat is just one focus in the world that aims to be every bit as grandiose, detailed, and fun to explore as Skyrim - with a wider color palate. Kingdoms' protagonist rises from the dead during the "Age of Arcana" and is forced to pick a side as the world teeters on the brink of war between rival kingdoms. All in all, there will be five different regions to wander about and four playable races to choose. Each character is highly customizable and uses the game's skill tree to unlock various "destinies" for their progression.

Only time will tell (and there's not much left) if Kingdoms will rise above the altitudinous bar it seems to have set for itself. It was in danger of falling off that bar briefly when a bug-filled demo was released in January and sent gamers reaching for their console's power button. However, Curt Shilling recently apologized and assured gamers that the mess wasn't indicative of the final product. We certainly hope that's the case and that Kingdoms can forge its own "destiny" as one of this year's best RPGs.
