Kingdom Hearts: New Trailers, Announcements, and Screenshots Revealed

Lots of Kingdom Hearts news pours in from the game's official Twitter account, with two new trailers, a not-so-surprising announcement, and two new screenshots of Kingdom Hearts 3.

It appears that 2017 is shaping up to be the year of Kingdom Hearts. A few months ago we learned that Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue would be releasing early next year, but now we also know that a re-release of the previous HD collections will finally be making their way to PlayStation 4 a couple months after. As if that wasn't enough, the game's official Twitter posted two new images for Kingdom Hearts 3, which some are presuming will also release in 2017.

It would be appropriate considering all previous games will now officially be making their way to the PlayStation 4 to prepare the uninitiated for the third and final game in this story arc — or to refresh those who have been longtime fans. Although some might play it all again simply for the fact it is an incredible series; a convoluted series, yes, but a great one nonetheless.

First up is the all new Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue trailer that isn't really a trailer at all. It's actually the opening movie for Aqua's story, which is the only new playable content in the 2.8 collection and the most anticipated.

The video focuses on Aqua, Ventus, and Terra's relationship, as well as where they all are at this moment in Kingdom Hearts. The gist is they're all kind of screwed at this point in time, but they're trying to make everything right again. However, Aqua is the one shouldering the bulk of the responsibility. This adventure follows her story as she tries to escape the darkness and help her friends.

Luckily, she will be getting some assistance from the big cheese himself, as well as possibly another familiar character who literally lends her a helping hand at the end of the video. This adventure will close the story gap between the second and third Kingdom Hearts titles, preparing gamers for the final showdown. The best part about this video is the opening is accompanied by everyone's new favorite mix of Simple and Clean.

Square Enix's new announcement today shouldn't come as a surprise to those who have been begging for this very thing to happen: both of the Kingdom Hearts HD collections will be re-released on PS4 in one, combined collection. That's right, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX — six games in total — is making its way to a next generation console.

It has been a pain experiencing the previous games in high definition while also having to hook up an older system just to do so. Now, that won't be an issue. Of course, this means gamers will have to buy the collection all over again if they purchased it previously, but that's not likely going to deter them. Whether the PlayStation 4 version will include anything extra wasn't stated, but the Twitter posts did state that the collection will be on one disc and the gameplay will be 60 FPS.

In Kingdom Hearts 3 news, two new images were posted from the upcoming sequel that show off one (possibly two) of Sora's new forms. From the descriptions posted with these images, Tetsuya Nomura himself requested they be released. What they show is that Sora has the ability to transform his Keyblade into other weapons — presumably dependent on his current Drive Form.

The first image shows off Sora's new Guard Form, which is an entirely new Drive Form. Here, his 'Herc's Shield' Keyblade changes into an actual shield; an appropriate change for this particular form. Fans of the series — and those who have a decent knowledge of Disney films — might recognize the stage as Mount Olympus, which can be found in the world of Hercules. The Olympus Colosseum has always played an important role in Kingdom Hearts and it will continue to do so in the third installment.

The second image wasn't entirely explained and the wording in its description makes it a tad confusing. It reads:

This power form was edited as it is the Keyblade from a world that hasn’t been released yet, so it has changed into a hammer shape.

The outfit Sora is wearing is noticeably different from his Guard Form outfit or his regular, non-Drive, attire, and is referred to as "power form," which would indicate another new form as no other form shares that name currently. Additionally, it's unclear what world they're referring to. Clearly, this is Olympus, so the Keyblade in question that has been clearly edited out might be from an entirely new world not yet announced. Square Enix wants to keep a few secrets, it seems. But they mention a hammer shape, which is exactly what this Keyblade transformation could be.

Next year is starting strong for fans of the series with two collections releasing, each containing several titles, but let's hope Kingdom Hearts 3 finishes in time to make 2017 truly the year of Kingdom Hearts. Perhaps the secret message contained in the HD collection box art could tell us more.

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 +2.5 ReMIX will release for PlayStation 4 on March 28, 2017.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue will release for PlayStation 4 on January 24, 2017.

Kingdom Hearts 3 will release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but no release date has been announced.
