For a long time, the main antagonist of the Kingdom Hearts series was Master Xehanort, a calculated man who divided his heart into multiple bodies to ensure his victories. The climax of Kingdom Hearts 3 saw Sora finally best the darkened Keyblade wielder, but it seems a much more threatening foe is about to reveal themselves.

Introduced in Kingdom Hearts: Back Cover, the Master of Masters quickly became a fan favorite. His playful attitude and mysterious plans were refreshing as fans of the series knew exactly what Xehanort's plan was for years before it was finally set in motion. There is still very little known about the Master of Masters, but it's that vital fans learn about certain aspects of his character before the release of Kingdom Hearts 4.

5 His Real Name

The Master of Masters is one of the most elusive villains to appear in the Kingdom Hearts series. Currently, frighteningly little is known about the cloaked vigilante, but certain tidbits of his identity have been revealed through the company he keeps. Like his title would imply, the Master acts as a mentor to six other Keyblade Masters, also known as Foretellers, whose names all reference a deadly sin.

Six of the Foretellers are named after one of Christianity's seven deadly sins. As the Master has yet to reveal his true name, it can be assumed it references the first deadly sin, Pride, which in Latin translates to "Superbia." The Master of Masters is clearly a proud man, so it wouldn't be too far-fetched if this was his actual name. Seeing that some Foretellers use shortened versions of these sins as names, The Master's name might even be "Super."

4 He Is Voiced By Ray Chase

Ray Chase has lent his tremendous talent as a voice actor to over fifty different video games during his time in the industry. Fans of the Kingdom Hearts series will likely be most familiar with his iconic performance as Noctis from Final Fantasy 15, but he is also known for his work in Mass Effect, NieR: Automata, and Telltale's Walking Dead. Ray is highly renowned for his ability to play both heroic and villainous parts, a skill that allows him to keep the Master of Masters' intentions shrouded in mystery.

His performance in Final Fantasy 15 is unique in that Noctis was once intended to be a totally different character. The fifteenth mainline Final Fantasy entry was planned to be titled Versus 13 and was said to tell a much darker version of a Final Fantasy story. Seeing that Yozora will likely be filling this role in Kingdom Hearts 4, it can be assumed that Ray Chase's casting was intentional.

3 His Power Over The Keyblade

The Master of Masters made his debut in Kingdom Hearts: Back Cover, an animated feature-length movie used to document the first Keyblade War. He appears several times throughout the narrative, but most of the film's focus is placed on his six apprentices. Those who wish to know more about the mysterious cloaked figure will need to seek out the mobile games he appears in.

Back Cover documents the origins of Xehanort's Gazing Eye Keyblade. Before falling into the Dark Seeker's hands, it belonged solely to the Master of Masters. Xehanort was unsure of the weapon's origins, but he often regarded it as the most ancient Keyblade in existence. If this is the case, there is a big chance that the Master of Masters created it, meaning that he is the source of all the Keyblades in Kingdom Hearts. To further solidify this theory, a scene in Dark Road saw him summoning Xehanort's Keyblade into his own hands, an ability that most Keyblade wielders are unable to perform. Keyblades appear to obey his command without question, making him one of the most powerful wielders in the series.

2 His Grief-Stricken Past

Kingdom Hearts: Union X [Cross] tells the story of an unnamed protagonist from the Age of Fairytales. Set centuries before the events of the original Kingdom Hearts, this game aims to document the origins of the Keyblade War and the people who started it. Progressing the game requires the player to venture to various Disney worlds to vanquish the Heartless that plague it, but things get complicated when the Master of Masters vanishes without a trace.

Five years before his disappearance, the Master divulged a small portion of his origins to his apprentice, Luxu. He revealed to his inquisitive student that another Keyblade War took place when the Master was a young boy. The Master lost a lot of his comrades to the darkness during this battle and, as a result, devoted the rest of his life to avenge them. He has suffered a great deal throughout his life, but he acts like he doesn't have a care in the world.

1 His Goal

The Master of Masters' intentions were a complete mystery for a long time. The only thing fans really knew about him was that he acted more like a villain than anything else. Countless Keyblade wielders looked to him for guidance, but most of the answers they received from him never really explained anything. Luxu, the Master's most trusted apprentice, was different. The Master trusted Luxu with some of his deepest secrets and even revealed his master plan to him.

The Master is undoubtedly the next Kingdom Hearts villain, but his intentions aren't all bad. His main goal is to expunge darkness from the world by any means necessary. He believes that trapping darkness in the hearts of his students and sacrificing their bodies is the only guaranteed way to restore peace to the worlds. His methods are questionable, but he's not an inherently bad person. Seeing as the release of Kingdom Hearts 4 will mark the beginning of the Lost Master Arc, the Master will more than likely be attempting to purge the remaining darknesses via the same means.
