Just on the heels of a potential sequel to Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep possibly being revealed in the ‘Final Mix’ edition of the game, Tetsuya Nomura recently discussed some interesting gameplay details that will be featured in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.

In this week’s issue of Famitsu, Nomura revealed that in Drop Dream Distance, players will not possess the ability to switch between playing as Sora and Riku whenever they choose. Instead, players will swap characters at different points throughout the game, but the change will be instantaneous.

It was also revealed that Sora and Riku’s goals and story arcs in the game will differ from each other significantly. Each character will end up facing off against different bosses, which brought Nomura to his next point, that both Sora and Riku will also have uniquely different control methods as well as actions they can perform.

The recently released Kingdom Hearts 3D trailer didn’t show any scenes of Sora and Riku fighting together, so this isn’t too much of a surprise. Although the instant-character-changing I can see catching players off-guard.

Here’s the trailer:

[Warning: Hardcore Kingdom Hearts discussion ahead – franchise SPOILERS]

There still has not been any confirmation on whether or not the events that will take place in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance are actually the “Mark of Mastery” exam that Sora and Riku are tasked to take. Passing the exam allows the taker to ascend to the rank of Keyblade Master.

As with almost every Kingdom Hearts game, there is a “Secret Ending” awarded after completing the game, meeting certain requirements. The one from Kingdom Hearts – Re:Coded features King Mickey speaking with Master Yen Sid about the impending return of Master Xehahort from Birth By Sleep.

Since Sora defeated Ansem – Seeker of Darkness in Kingdom Hearts and Xemnas in Kingdom Hearts II, Yen Sid explains that Master Xehanort will be able to reform since his Heartless and Nobody have been destroyed. Yen Sid is worried however that King Mickey will not be enough to put a stop to the new threat, and feels there could be the return of multiple enemies.

Yen Sid tasks King Mickey with summoning both Sora and Riku to him in order for them to take the “Mark of Mastery” exam, which is the test that was taken by both Terra and Aqua in Birth By Sleep.

It will be very interesting to see just how much if at all, Kingdom Hearts 3D will be connected to the “Mark of Mastery” exam, but also keep in mind that Aqua’s story from Birth By Sleep isn’t finished yet.

The period between when Aqua gets trapped in the Realm of Darkness to where she arrives at the Dark Margin, where she meets Ansem the Wise, is around 10-11 years so if there is a “Birth By Sleep – Volume Two” announced, then maybe there will be more answers revealed that in turn will link back to Kingdom Hearts 3D.

Any gamers feeling really confused right now after trying to piece together all of the connections and missing plot holes left after playing a new Kingdom Hearts game? Could it be that with more details about the new games revealed, the connection between Kingdom Hearts – Re:Coded, Kingdom Hearts 3D, and “Birth By Sleep – Volume Two” will make more sense?
