At the D23 Expo Japan early Saturday morning, Square Enix debuted new gameplay footage for Kingdom Hearts 3 along with confirming a new Disney world for the game. Thus far the likes of Hercules and Toy Story are already set to get the KH treatment, and now Monsters Inc. is joining the fold.
The new Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer follows a similar pattern to past footage for the highly anticipated game. Square Enix sets the scene with an introduction to the characters of the Disney property, in this case Sully, Boo, and Mike Wazowski; debuts Sora, Goofy, and Donald’s new look themed around the associated film; and concludes the trailer with a tease at the larger Kingdom Hearts 3 story.
Take a look below:
No question, the footage looks like trademark Kingdom Hearts with fast action, impressive particle effects, and a lot of style. Some might be a little disappointed that Square went to another Pixar film for its inspiration, but based on the trailer it looks like Monsters Inc. will offer plenty of unique opportunities for combat (Keyblade traded for yo-yo?), platforming, and boss battles.
If nothing else, Monsters Inc. fans can rest easy knowing that Square Enix captured some of the spirit of the Pixar film, as evidenced by the use of the doors as a means of transportation. But the other Disney properties are well represented in the footage as well, like Tangled and The Little Mermaid.
But of course, it is the last part of the trailer that fans will be talking about, for two reasons. First is the story tease that shows Vanitas confronting Sora and making reference to Ventus’ heart within the Kingdom Hearts protagonist. It is but a small tease, but one that suggests where the story in Square Enix’s sequel is headed, at least for those that follow the exceedingly complex narrative.
The other exciting bit is the ‘Coming 2018’ tag at the end of the trailer, further confirming Square Enix’s intent to release the game within the calendar year. The developer and publisher had already confirmed Kingdom Hearts 3 for 2018, but skepticism surrounds any release date announcement from Square’s JRPG wing. After all, we’re talking about a game that fans have been waiting 12 years to see come out.
Kingdom Hearts 3 releases 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One.
