Last week, Kingdom Hearts 3 game director Tetsuya Nomura claimed that it would be possible to bring the game to the Nintendo Switch. However, according to information from Game Informer writer Imran Khan, it was determined by Square Enix and Nintendo that it would be "unfeasible" to port Kingdom Hearts 3 to Nintendo's handheld/home console hybrid.

"Last I heard, there was a talk between Nintendo and Square Enix about what they could do with Kingdom Hearts 3. It was deemed unfeasible to get Kingdom Hearts 3 on the Switch," Khan said while appearing on Kinda Funny Games Daily. He acknowledged that while the Switch technically supports Unreal Engine 4, the engine that powers Kingdom Hearts 3, that ultimately the game is just too demanding for the Switch's hardware.

Assuming Khan's information is accurate, Switch owners may be disappointed to learn that Kingdom Hearts 3 is not coming to the console. However, Khan didn't rule out the possibility of Square Enix bringing the classic Kingdom Hearts games to the Switch instead, saying, "That's probably what they settled on."

If Square Enix does bring classic Kingdom Hearts games to the Switch, then it will likely be in the form of the Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far or the HD Collections. These compilations bring together the bulk of the Kingdom Hearts games that have been released to date, and include some original content to help bridge the gap between the originals and Kingdom Hearts 3.

However, it's too early to rule out the possibility of Kingdom Hearts 3 coming to the Switch at some point in some capacity. After all, Nomura himself said a Switch port was possible, and maybe Square Enix could downgrade the game in some areas to make it function on the Switch.

Regardless, considering the Switch's sales success and Kingdom Hearts' history on Nintendo platforms, a Kingdom Hearts game of some kind coming to the Switch seems more like a matter of "when" than "if."

Kingdom Hearts 3 is out now for PS4 and Xbox One.
