Square Enix releases a new image for Kingdom Hearts 3 that pays homage to an iconic shot from Final Fantasy 7, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this week.
After Square Enix released Final Fantasy 15 at the end of last year, the studio paved the way for its next two big releases: Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3. Both games are highly anticipated but neither has a firm release date, which puts them on somewhat equal footing. It makes sense, then, that Square would use one to pay homage to the other.
Today, Square released a new image from Kingdom Hearts 3 that pays tribute to Final Fantasy 7 in a very subtle way. As fans can see in the tweet below, Kingdom Hearts hero Sora can be seen standing in front of Rapunzel’s tower, with a unique keyblade sheathed across his back.
At a glance, the image seems fairly innocuous, but diehard Final Fantasy 7 fans will recognize the pose and framing. Just substitute Sora for Cloud and Rapunzel’s tower for the Shinra building, and we have a perfect replication of one of Final Fantasy 7’s most iconic images. For some releases, the image of Cloud and the looming building is even the box art.

Unfortunately, the Kingdom Hearts 3 screenshot doesn’t show or tell fans anything new about the upcoming action RPG, which makes sense given its intent. While Kingdom Hearts may be on Square Enix’s calendar, and it may even be its most anticipated game, the focus right now is on the Final Fantasy anniversary. That being said, there has been a complete lack of news regarding Kingdom Hearts 3, just nothing as substantial as has been revealed about Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Speaking of, Square Enix celebrated the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy 7 and the 30th anniversary of the Final Fantasy series with several new announcements and reveals. There was a new image from Final Fantasy 7 Remake that showed Cloud and his buster sword, the reveal of Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age’s release date, and more details about the upcoming Final Fantasy 15 DLC.
As far as Kingdom Hearts 3 is concerned it’s a waiting game, and no one really knows what Square Enix has planned. The hope is that the studio will have more to show at E3 2017, but there is no guarantee. Final Fantasy 7 Remake appears to be getting the bulk of the attention as of right now, and there are even rumors that the first episode will release this year. Kingdom Hearts 3, on the other hand, seems more like a 2018 release, at the earliest.
Kingdom Hearts 3 has no release date but will be available on PS4 and Xbox One.
