Kingdom Hearts 3 Release Date Delayed to Early 2019

Kingdom Hearts 3 may be arriving somewhat later than expected, according to an announcement made during Saturday night's Kingdom Hearts Orchestra event. Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura apologized, asking fans to wait just a little bit longer, and then announced that Kingdom Hearts 3 would officially launch on January 29, 2019.

Up until today, Kingdom Hearts fans have been expecting a release date for the popular Disney and Square Enix mash-up action RPG in 2018. A final release date was expected to be announced at E3 this year, either during a major console media briefing or Square Enix's own press conference on Monday, June 11. Today's release date announcement undercuts those expectations.

Another short delay for Kingdom Hearts 3 will undoubtedly be met with disappointment, but is also understanding. The scale of Kingdom Hearts 3 seems to grow with the release of every new teaser or trailer, with new Disney properties regularly joining the fray.

In addition to announcing the January 29 release date, Nomura also confirmed that Square Enix would be sharing plenty more Kingdom Hearts 3 information in the days to come. In fact, Nomura says that not just one, but a few trailers are planned to be shown to E3 audiences. That's on top of what's reported to be a playable Kingdom Hearts 3 demo on the E3 show floor. Square Enix will definitely be unveiling more of the Disney universe for fans to explore.

So far, Square Enix has announced several worlds from Disney and past Kingdom Hearts titles for Kingdom Hearts 3. Mount Olympus from Hercules was the first world to be revealed, followed by Twilight Town, Yen Sid's Tower, and the Old Mansion from Kingdom Hearts 2. Next was the Kingdom of Corona from Tangled, and since then Big Hero 6's San Fransokyo, Toy Story's Andy's House and Pizza Planet, and also a setting in Monsters Inc. were revealed.

Square Enix could still announce new locations this E3, or show fans a closer look at San Fransokyo or the Monsters Inc. world. Or the company could save all of its reveals for later, now that release is a little bit further off.
