‘Kingdom Hearts’ Survey Suggests PS3 Release Still Possible

By | 1 year ago

When Kingdom Hearts 3 was revealed at E3 2013 for PS4 and Xbox One, fans were ecstatic that the saga of Sora was finally set to be continued with a proper, full-fledged sequel. Since the game’s announcement, Square Enix has kept it mostly under wraps, with the exception of a new gameplay trailer released at the D23 Expo in Japan last October.

More information on Kingdom Hearts 3 is expected to drop within the coming months, though. We know that the game will be appearing at this year’s D23 Expo at least, and there remains a distinct possibility that it will be featured during Square Enix’s E3 press conference next week.

There are still many unknowns in regards to Kingdom Hearts 3, including story details or a release date. And now a recent survey posted by Square Enix on the official Kingdom Hearts Facebook page throws another mystery into the mix, teasing the possibility of the game coming to other platforms besides PS4 and Xbox One.

The survey asks about how important localization is to players, and also which systems they’re playing on. Numerous systems are called out, including PC and Wii U, as well as last-gen systems such as the PS3 and Xbox 360. The PS3 even has its very own, separate question on the survey, hinting that if Square Enix is considering the idea of bringing Kingdom Hearts 3 to other platforms, that the PS3 would be a priority over the rest. This isn’t surprising, considering the other main entries in the series have remained exclusive to PlayStation to this day.

The survey also mentions other systems, including the Vita and the 3DS. It is unlikely that the 3DS could handle Kingdom Hearts 3, so perhaps the intention of the survey is to see how viable it would be to port the older games to other systems. After all, there are two Kingdom Hearts collections already out for PS3, and with Kingdom Hearts 3 coming to Xbox One, it would make sense to give Xbox gamers a chance to play the classic titles. It’s also worth noting that the PS4 and Xbox One are both mentioned in the survey as well, despite Kingdom Hearts 3 already being announced for those platforms, so maybe the Kingdom Hearts collections are poised for a new-gen upgrade.

Those that want to take the survey have until June 12th to do so. Interestingly enough, the survey ends just days before Square Enix’s planned E3 presentation on June 16th, which may be an indication that Square Enix is looking to collect this data in preparation for their E3 presentation next week.

Sometimes these surveys are merely companies testing the waters, and they don’t always result in anything substantial. However, other times, they do in fact truly influence decisions. For example, months before officially announcing Rock Band 4, Harmonix released a survey meant to gauge public interest in a new sequel in the series. Whether or not this survey will actually influence Square Enix to bringing Kingdom Hearts 3 or other Kingdom Hearts games to more platforms remains to be seen, but they certainly didn’t bother creating it for no reason.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is scheduled to release on PS4 and Xbox One, with any other potential platforms, currently not confirmed at this point.
