Kingdom Hearts 3 news is pouring out of E3 2018, and the latest news is that Kingdom Hearts 3 may have post-launch DLC. Today, Kingdom Hearts franchise director Tetsuya Nomura spoke with IGN and gave his thoughts on the possibility of DLC to expand Kingdom Hearts 3 after launch.

In the interview, Nomura stated that he and the other developers are “open to expanding the game with DLC after launch” with whatever they think would be a good fit for the franchise. Nomura reasoned that most major game titles have DLC of some kind, and he believes Kingdom Hearts 3 is a major title, so DLC is not out of the question. Perhaps the DLC could expand the story of other characters, or add to the growing list of worlds for Kingdom Hearts 3.

Nomura said not to expect any concrete announcements soon, but he did say that one possibility could be the return of accessory customizations. Kingdom Hearts 0.2: A Fragmentary Passage featured cosmetic items to customize Aqua’s appearance, so it’s not a first for the franchise. However, it will likely not be in Kingdom Hearts 3, since Sora, Donald, and Goofy usually have a specifically-tailored outfit for almost every world they visit. For example, the Toy Story world shows off the gang if they were action figures. Fans can actually obtain physical versions of these action figures with the recently announced deluxe collection for Kingdom Hearts 3.

Kingdom Hearts 3 recently received yet another delay, pushing the release date back to January 2019. However, despite what fans anticipated, the delay was not a result of needing more development time. In a separate interview, Nomura stated that the delay was to better align the global release date with the Japanese release date, which is January 25, 2019.

The idea of Kingdom Hearts 3 DLC is certainly new. The highly anticipated game is certainly one of the biggest titles on the release radar, so it’s no surprise that Nomura and the other developers are considering expanding the game even more. Hopefully the DLC will not impact the main story of the game, as it will likely be the biggest one of the entire franchise.

Kingdom Hearts 3 will release January 29, 2019 for PS4 and Xbox One.
