Changing a series mainstay, Kingdom Hearts 3 is ditching the three party member system. The latest Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer suggested more characters will be joining the party than ever before, which director Tetsuya Nomura later confirmed.
The newest trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3 premiered this weekend at D23, a biennial exposition event for Disney fans. The trailer revealed a brand new world, Toy Story, where Sora, Donald, and Goofy teamed up with Buzz Lightyear and Woody to take on some heartless. The combat was notable because all five characters were fighting at once at the same time.
IGN got the story straight on this new development by asking Tetsuya Nomura himself. In an interview conducted at D23, Nomura said, “We’re able to depict multiple characters. Up to five people can join, even more, multiple characters can join your party.” It appears that the the Toy Story trailer was an example of combat with a full party.
In previous entries, party sizes were limited to just three members, which caused some frustrating situations when a hero from a new world wanted to join the team. Players would often have to make the choice of swapping out Donald or Goofy to accommodate the new character. It seems those days are behind us.
In the same interview with IGN, Nomura revealed Kingdom Hearts 3 will also feature a second playable character alongside Sora. Nomura refused to disclose the identity of this character, so there’s no telling whether this will be a familiar face or an entirely new one. Kingdom Hearts 2 began with players taking the role of Roxas, and later entries would do the same for other characters. So, this isn’t a first for the series.
The newest Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer has certainly given fans a lot to anticipate, but it’s also given them a window as to when their anticipation can finally end. The finale of the trailer confirmed a release window of 2018, but given how long fans have waited for the game already, that is subject to change.
Kingdom Hearts 3 will be released in 2018 on PS4 and Xbox One.
