Kingdom Hearts 3's has been in development for so long that it's hard to believe the action RPG will be launching in less than two months. Yet that reality is all but undeniable, especially with Square Enix's latest gift to fans patiently containing their enthusiasm. Sunday morning saw the release of Kingdom Hearts 3's opening cinematic movie - or at least a portion of it. Fans will have to wait just a while longer for the full cinematic's release, something they're already used to by now anyway.

The Kingdom Hearts 3 opening movie trailer, as it's called, runs just short of two minutes in length. For comparison's sake, the full Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2 opening cinematics, featuring the now-iconic Utada Hikaru songs "Simple and Clean" and "Sanctuary," respectively, each run around five minutes long. So when Square Enix says that this is only a partial look at Kingdom Hearts 3's opening cinematic, it means that the final movie will likely be well over twice as long.

Yet again Utada Hikaru returns to the Kingdom Hearts franchise, scribing both the English and Japanese versions of the song accompanying the opening cinematic. Kingdom Hearts 3's English version of the song is titled "Face My Fears" and is done in partnership with Skrillex. Fans can likely expect the full version of Face My Fears to also be much longer in its final form. Whether it'll ever prove as iconic as Simple and Clean, however, is difficult to imagine.

The opening cinematic itself won't prove too revelatory for Kingdom Hearts 3 fans thirsty for new story details. The video focuses rather heavily on the parallel journies of Sora, Kairi, and Riku; Ventus, Aqua, and Terra; and Roxas, Xion, and Axel. The villainous Xehanort, in several forms, is also featured prominently, alongside Xemnas and Ansem, with Organization XIII in the periphery. And of course Sora's Disney allies Donald, Goofy, and Mickey are also along for the ride.

All things considered, the partial Kingdom Hearts 3 intro cinematic does a good job of keeping things simple so as not to overwhelm players new and old with Kingdom Heart's robust story so far. There are clearly moments of reference to the more complicated events from the franchise's past, but for the most part, the video focuses on establishing who the heroes, villains, and those caught in-between are.

Kingdom Hearts 3 releases January 29, 2019, on both the PS4 and Xbox One.
