One of the most challenging and memorable bosses in the Kingdom Hearts series is Final Fantasy 7‘s Sephiroth. Sephiroth makes an appearance in both Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2 as a notoriously difficult optional boss for Sora and the gang to battle, but it sounds like he may not be going for the hat trick. According to series creator and Kingdom Hearts 3 game director Tetsuya Nomura, Sephiroth may not be in the third game at all.

In a recent interview with Mirror, Nomura hinted that Kingdom Hearts 3 will have secret, optional bosses in the vein of Sephiroth, but that Sephiroth himself is unlikely to return. However, Kingdom Hearts 3 still has a year or so of development before it hits store shelves, and things could change between now and launch.

“In terms of the secret boss, we can’t say anything at this time, but in terms of Sephiroth specifically, my development team are worried that we’ve had him come back so many times so they’re maybe worried it might be redundant at this point. We’re still deliberating on it.”

Longtime Kingdom Hearts fans would likely appreciate the chance to face off against Sephiroth one last time in Kingdom Hearts 3. But while it may be disappointing to some that Sephiroth may not be returning for the third game as an optional boss fight, it’s possible he could appear in another capacity. While Sora and his party members may not have the chance to face off against the legendary villain themselves, he could still appear in cut-scenes and play a role in the story.

If Sephiroth is in fact in Kingdom Hearts 3 in some capacity, it’s hard to say when we will actually find out. It’s possible Square Enix could be saving his appearance as a surprise for the game, or it could be revealed at a special event like the Tokyo Game Show or the D23 Expo in Japan this coming February.

As one of the most famous villains in video game history, it’s understandable why some fans may be disappointed if Sephiroth skips Kingdom Hearts 3. Ultimately, we won’t know for sure until the game is out, so Kingdom Hearts fans that want one more chance to fight Sephiroth shouldn’t give up all hope just yet.

Kingdom Hearts 3 will launch in 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One.
