Fans that have been waiting over a decade to play Kingdom Hearts 3 are going to have to wait a little longer. While some believed that the game would be available by the end of the year, an investors document released by Square Enix, which was then posted on NeoGAF, shows that the game is likely going to release in 2018 or later.

The investors document shows some of Square Enix's recent releases, as well as highlights some of the company's biggest upcoming games. Some of these upcoming games have a release window, with Dragon Quest 11 and Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age both on track for release later this year. However, Kingdom Hearts 3 doesn't have any release window listed beyond fiscal year 2018.

This news may be a disappointment to fans that have been waiting for over a decade to see what happens next in the Kingdom Hearts saga, but the good news is that they will likely get another glimpse at the game before the year is out. Square Enix has said in the past that Kingdom Hearts 3 will be shown in 2017, and considering the franchise's popularity, it seems likely that such a showing could take place as soon as E3 2017 in June. And if not then, perhaps at this year's Tokyo Game Show event in the fall.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Unlikely to Launch in 2017 - Square Enix investors report

Besides Kingdom Hearts 3, fans will notice that there are a couple of other high profile Square Enix games that aren't expected to launch in 2017, according to the investors report. From the looks of it, both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the upcoming Avengers video game will have to wait until 2018 or later before fans can get their hands on the games.

While some fans may be disappointed that these high profile games and Kingdom Hearts 3 aren't expected to release by the end of the year, at least Square Enix appears to be taking its time with the projects. This long development time should give the Kingdom Hearts 3 team plenty of time to polish the game's new features, like the enhanced combat system, and ensure that everything is up to the franchise's high standards when it does eventually launch.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is in development for PS4 and Xbox One.
